I'm off to London for a few days, then a long weekend in Yorkshire.
Any tips for woodenboaty things to do or see?
(Naturally, this includes a highly reccommended pint in a highly reccommmended pub, just thinking about things that float.)

London is a medium sized place which is nearly impossible to get around - Yorkshire is a bigger place and much more difficult to get about.
There are lots of good beers - but my tastes and yours might differ...
Any of the "Eff and Firkin" pubs are good.
Phrase of the Week.
Sorry - Canadian actually - but lots of people make that mistake

I should've prefaced: We're not first-timers. We each did a semester there about ten years ago. Yes, I staggered home from a number of Firkins. Is the Dogbolter still a popular brew?
We flatter ourselves to think that we have refined tastes in beer. =)
My favorite at the time was a Morrell's smooth, but I don't recall that the Morrell's brew was widely available beyond oxfordshire.
Good tip in the Davey stuff! I can't believe I didn't think of that!!!

http://www.camra.org.uk and buy the book.
My personal favourite in Yorkshire is the second pub in the village of Appletreewick in Wharfedale - Real Ale, decent food and delightful walking.
Another treat is John Boddy's - Boroughbridge (01423 322370) a Sawmill, timber stockist and toolstore, it is beside the river Ure and the A1M (major North/South road) the approach is up a track by a field with HUGE neolithic standing stones. He has an amazing selection Brit native hardwoods and an eye boggling selection of exotics.

First, you MUST visit the Tower Museum in Leeds - right on the way to York and a fantastic museum unless you are a fanatic peacenik...then maybe not so good.

Don't know much about maritime stuff in London, but again on the way to Yorkshire, Norfolk has the Broads with a lot of wooden (and other) boating stuff.

Hunter's Yard, located in its secluded private dyke in the heart of Norfolk's world famous inland waterway system, has been home to the superb Hunter Fleet since 1931.
Providing a unique opportunity to sail on beautifully maintained traditional mahogany cabin yachts - no engines, no electricity, just oil lamps and superb sailing ability! World famous and frequently featured on TV (Lullaby was 'Teasel' in BBC's production of Swallows & Amazons Forever), specialised sailing publications and the general press.

And on the beer front -- look for CAMRA ales -- my current fave is O'Hanlon's Yellowhammer -- YUM!

I might suggest a pilgrimage to Heybridge basin, Lunch at the "Jolly Sailor" and raise a pint (or 6) in memory of our dear, departed Ian Wright.... Adnam's Broadside...

I'm searching my memory a bit but I think it was York.
About 30 yrs ago, the city was putting in a down town parkinglot. While under construction, the city discovered a good portion of the Roman ruins with artifacts. Instead of just bulldozing them up, the decided to make an upper level parkinglot with the ground floor a museum...Interesting if you like Roman museums.
Also, I liked the Train museum there.

I second the Cutty Sark suggestion. And take lots of pics for me while you're there would ya?. Thanks. I like the detail shots, close ups of bitts, blocks, fittings, rigging details, joinerwork, and that sort of thing.

You might consider going to Whitby, where Capt.Cook came from, also Staithes where Winslow Homer the great American painter spent some time and painted the sea and the fisher folk. You can also get good kippers up there.

Come to Henley-on-Thames to visit the Rowing and River Museum, and see lots of lovely slipper launches. I might even buy you lunch....

With the peacocks and (duh) tame trout in the river that you can feed bread crumbs to.... Haven't been there since 1970, so it may have changed....

There are MANY pubs in and near Henley...not an inconsiderable factor in moving here!

If you'd like to say you rowed the Henley Regatta course, contact the Henley Whalers (http://www.henleywhalers.org.uk/), who row it and more every Weds night from around 8pm, but in a whaler, which is a lot harder to fall out of than the usual craft you see there. I'm sure they would welcome a visitor from overseas.

Here is their current boat, pictured with a different crew in the recent Thames river race, 22 miles during which we received a number of offers for that motor. The Henley Whalers normally wind up at the Anchor in town, or the Flowerpot at Aston, for an earnest review of technique, meeting the pub requirement quite well.
