Milo, if you consider salt air and water to be a mind altering sustance, then yes I was drunk last night. I drank about ten hours of it over the weekend. :D And you? Got pictures to prove it, too.......

Wana see????? But first I must continue my intake some more around 11am. with the tide change. I hate the hangover upon sobering up. Later, gotta glue and catch some live bait.

Oyster where are the photos of you doing ANYTHING else but posting political mumbo jumbo on the forum. You promised you would post em Im going out in the rain now check on Dove and take Tidbit for a spin. How about you ????

Ayup :D

Heading up wind all I have to do it luff into the wind and stall, so no big deal. Everything on Tidbit has become second nature with me now.

For example, today when I was leaving the dock and out into the channel a large flotilla of this water chestnut weed floated in on the incoming tide. Before I could shift into forward it had sucked into the prop  Causing the sheer-pin to go POP :(. No big deal the sail cover and ties were just about off. I dropped the centerboard and raised the sail with the tiller in between my legs. Caught a puff and pulled out of the marina unscathed :D. Heading out into the wind I pulled the motor up and forgot about it and enjoyed sailing :D

Heading back home I dropped the sail & pulled the motor on deck and replaced the pin. Motored uneventfully home, like it was second nature.

Just another day on the Hudson ;)

Got a photo ? :D

I go sailing EVERYDAY on this boat sometimes 3 times a day since April 1 and it's NOT my job :) Must suck to have something people love to do become a drag of an everyday JOB :p

#1 you don't know MY boat like I know her and how to handle her in all sorts of conditions. Today she handled like a champ set the cleat and just tacked back and forth across the river, almost no adjustments needed, easy as pie.

#2 Herb Baum built it like this and "Wink" Warner DESIGNED that cleat to use as it is and it works fine. You want to challenge those two guys ??

By the way I can uncleat it almost as fast as a jam cleat. :D

Edited to add: What did traditional sailors use before cams?

It does suck sometimes, especially when it's cold. The cold sucks. Nasty passengers suck too. I don't like it when I say, "Watch the block ma'am, we're tacking." and get a look like she's greatly inconvenienced. But I still enjoy the sailing. And I think to myself, at least I'm not a real estate agent. :D

Also you never annswered the question about Tappan Zee's name , do you reconize it from your area ?

Not sure I don't live on or near the Hudson , is there a body of water by that name ? A bay , cove , inlet?

Yea there are locations you have to know, never sail on the lee shore around Storm King as you go through the Gate. The wind has no mountains to shadow it so it will broach a small boat that does not know this. Just like once you round Constitution island at West Point the wind just dies and thats why that stretch is called Martyrs reach. It was one of major reasons West Point was built where it is, cause if the british fleet ever came around there sails would luff and West Point would rain cannon fire upon them There are a bunch of little sailing tricks you need to learn and come only with sailing every day.

As for Tappan Zee's name - I thought it was a redundant question since it is a major bridge and The name “Tappan Zee” was derived from the Indian and Dutch settlers that inhabited the area during the pre-colonial days. The Dutch that inhabited New York in the 1600s
gave the name “zee,” meaning wide expanse of water, to the Hudson River. Today, the bridge also bears the name of Malcolm Wilson, who served as governor of New York State from 1974 to 1975.

PDF onboard but to be honest rarely worn except when Tess is aboard.

I don't recall Paul. There is the Tappan Zee Bridge which goes over the Hudson.
I'm not sure why I think this but isn't Zee in Dutch sea in English? I keep on thinking of the Zidder Zee..phonetically spelled, in Holland

Ah so it's a bridge :) That jibe, Peter said, was letting the main boon go right over without any sort of "slack / luffing " I MTL have some of the terms wrong . He said the old cargo ship's did it as they's have to tack so often fighting tides / unfavorable winds . He said on large ship's it could snap a mast ,as the momenutm is greater / more sudden. Lore goes that some Skipper beheaded himself with some such manuverway back when sails where the norm on the river. So it was a risk they'd take when they felt lucky , sort of like the PDF thing I guess:D :D

OK Joe, from one father to another (for the love of your family),if you like sailing on windy days without PFD you should put a cam cleat on that boat. Besides sheating out is more fun than heading up,its like playing a fish, and heading up just throws you off course.
