I've done a search but didn't turn up much. Need to replace 6 deck beams. Carlins are ok. Deck beams may be oak, but I'm only guessing. These beams are in the well deck area with engine and generator below(high humidity).

Suggestions for wood type would be appreciated.

In your area, live oak or yellow (longleaf) pine, or white oak or some solid South American timber like greenheart, that is how I think about it from this distance.

What sort of cost constraints do you have? Teak, yacal or ipol would be ideal. They are strong, virtually rot resistant and hold fasteners well. They are beautiful finished bright too.

Figure out what they are made of first. I would go back with the original wood. If not then I would use white oak. You may be able to buy it from MCEWEN LUMBER 405 N. Lane Ave. 783-0170. I get a lot of white oak from them. They are a wholesale company and require a minimum of 50 board feet, If not than they should be able to tell you where you can buy it. I also buy from Chipmunks in Edge Water; but I just got the last of his 8/4. He may get some more in soon. http://www.chipmunkhardwoods.com/index.php Give Brad a call and he may order it for you.

Hey guys

Thanks for the input. I'll check locally to see what's available. These beams are only about 40 in long, but measure a full 3-3/4 by 2.

Concordia....if you come back to this post, I was wondering if the marine supply place(can't remember the name) on Iberia St might have something that approached red lead?

Thanks again ya'll

If you're talking about Marine Supply and Oil at 150 Riberia Street, no red lead. Call Kirby's (508) 997-9008

However, if you ever come down to Marine Supply, just keep on Riberia a few more blocks. We're right next to the street at 258 Riberia - just behind the Oasis office.
