I'm going to build a 20' SImmons Sea SKiff this summer. I figure it would be a good idea to have the motor to build the boat to fit it. With the 20' SSS, the recommended HP range is from 50-90 I think. I have pretty much decided that a Tohatsu is the motor of choice, I've heard only very positive things about them. Which would be the best option for this boat- a 50 TLDI or the 70 TLDI? What about steering recommendations? I'd like hydraulic, but I'm not sure how that would work in this boat. ANy other manufactureres I should look at?
Thanks
Be aware that the warranty on your motor begins ticking from the day you purchase it. If you take two years to build your boat (it happens ;) ) you will essentially be installing a brand-new motor that has run out of warranty. Careful planning & execution of construction, combined with scaled drawings from the engine company dhould allow you to purchase the engine just before installation.
I prefer hydraulic steering installations for the flexibility in hose routing, but it is an option that usually costs about 60%-80% more than cable systems.

Thanks for pointing that out. As soon as I decide ona motor, I'll probably get the installation instructonsfor the engine mounting as well as the steering systems, etc.
Only you can determine the amount of horsepower you want per your total weight on the water... but all three of the Tohatsu TLDI motors are great, whether 50, 70 or 90 hp. Lots of guys have them here in Texas, especially on the coast and many prefer them to Yamaha. One guy I know who has the 50hp TLDI cannot say enough about the way that engine runs with state of the art fuel injection. If in doubt, go larger...
Good luck,
RB
