We're finally cutting the sternpost for Sonja. In December we wrapped that timber in plastic in an effort to keep it from checking and it worked. I resawed it to get the depth that we needed. I'll laminate today if I can get the edges dressed properly.

I didn't have anything to clamp it to so's I could resaw with a chainsaw, so I clamped it to a tree and moved the bandclamps when I had to.

SWMBO told me to stand there so you could tell that I didn't need an ambulance and all my parts are still attached.

I had to dutchman the end of the keelson just below the sternpost because of the bolt problem I gave myself years ago. I'll post that in here when I get a chance.

What did you wrap the timber with and how tight did you cover? Did you wet it or add any moisture to the wood before you covered it?

BTW - Good work with the chain saw, if that was me there'd be one less tree standing today :D

We used a 5mil plastic sheet and wrapped it like a burrito. It wasn't wrapped very tight at all. One end was open a little. We just wanted to keep as much moisture in as we could. I hadn't looked at it since December and was surprised that the only check was at the other end around a knot and extending in about two feet. No loss, it wasn't usuable lumber anyway.
