I'm looking to aquire a satphone, its for a transat in October. I've looked at coverage and it seems globalstar does not cover the areas I want and Iridium is the way to go.

There are rentals out there, there also seems to be an active market on eBay of people buying these things for a short term gig (please don't let this turn into an Iraq thread, but Iraq bound military seems to be one of the uses).

Generally, I hate cellphones and am of the Blondie Hasler persuasion offshore, but a transat with paying guests in hurricane season and college bound kids at home changes the topography a bit. I don't need to own one for the long term however.

Perhaps try BrianW I think I've heard him mention using them up in Alaska.

Not a whole lot to add, other than that even up here Iridium has the best coverage. I'll be renting one for $75 a week, plus $1.75 a minute for calls.

I do recall checking out Globalstar phones, and learned that they also work as cell phones if your in range.
