From the Physics News Graphics (http://www.aip.org/png/) section of the website of the American Institute of Physics (http://www.aip.org/) comes this picture of the sharpest manmade thing (http://www.aip.org/png/2006/264.htm):

A field ion microscope (FIM) image of a very sharp tungsten needle. The small round features are individual atoms. The lighter colored elongated features are traces captured as atoms moved during the imaging process (approximately 1 second).

It reminds me a story, probably apochryphal, of the Nazis prior to WWII.

Tooting their own horn about German technological achievement, they sent a piece of drawn gold wire around to various legations, proclaiming it the finest wire ever drawn! The Swiss sent it back with a note, politely requesting that they have a look at it under a microscope. The Swiss had drilled a hole through it!

Funny story. I wonder if it's true?
