I was wondering if you folks could point me in the right direction to buy some cedar. I need to put a new deck on a cedar planking boat that My father took off. It was originally cedar and I like to put it back that way. I have a problem though because I don't have a clue where to buy some cedar or what kind of cedar I should be looking for. The boat is just about finished except for the deck so any help would greatly be appreciated. I live in western new york south of buffalo. thanks again for your help and time. Dave I am from belmont new york 70 miles south of buffalo. I have an old cedar planking boat I am looking for some kind of cedar to replace what was on the the deck. It is a fishing boat 18 feet long . It has a small 18 hp motor and oars with it. It had a deck on it about 41/2 long that I am trying to replace because my father took it off and I don't know what he did the the cedar that was on it.

You can try Certainly Wood in East Aurora... they are mostly veneers, but if they don't have it, they may be able to point you further...
There's another place off the Main Street exit of I-290 in Amherst... I wish I could remember the name, someone else here may know... I could drive to it in my sleep, scored some really nice walnut there once... But I can't remember the name of it for the life of me, sorry...

Charles,
One of the stars of traditional wooden boatbuilding in the Finger Lakes lives and works near Hammondsport. His name is Dan Sutherland, and his company name is something like "Sutherland Boat and Coach". I haven't done business with him so I'm not certain of the name.
He has always been seen as a champion of wooden boat salvation and a call to him should give you the availability of any type of boat wood in that area.

Just guessin' mind you , but Northern White or Atlantic White Cedar tho the last is really a Juniper.
Haven't worked with Northern but, do know Atlantic White and it can be a tough stringy wood. What Seabright Skiffs are made of.
Look up that fellow CC mentioned and talk it over with him as to the best Cedar to use on a small deck.
Good Luck
