There are some folks on this list who are lightning rods for abuse. Ishmael is one, Meerkat is another. Sorry, but I don't get a whole lot of fun denigrating other folks. Ishmael's posts poetry and all, may not turn me on, but for chrisssake, he's got feelings, why be a damn jackass and trash him and everything he says. Meerkat gets a whole lot of abuse too, but unfortunately he also dishes it out in a particularly nasty way. Sorry Meer, but I think you need to read the precepts again, and this time pay attention. Guess I'm wierd, I don't get my cookies off trashing other people. Yes, I do get pissed occasonally, I do get annoyed and stick it to folks occasionally, but damn, I don't do it four or five times on every damn thread. Come on guys and gals, let folks be once in a while.

Can't we all just get along? Shaking finger at David, myself, many others. Ish doesn't really attack people, he just invites abuse that's really tough to walk away from. Martyrdom can't be that cool, can it Jack?

Although I infrequently post in the bilge, I have to respond to this thread. Foremost because, Ish, in responding to my many posts as a WBF infant, way back while I was building my first Wooden Boat back in 2000, in all of his logical, well-thought-out, widom, is like a father to me.

On the other hand, as someone who once inspired to build a Whilly Boat, Meerkat, despite his weeny, mealy-mouth liberalism, is like a brother to me.

And so I impore both of you to try to get along, if only for my sake.

I'm more of a reader than a contributor also. As far as Ishmael goes, I think his posts are fairly well thought out, whether you agree with him or not, he does a pretty fair job of backing up his opinions. I have little respect for those who feel it necessary to throw stones an have no substance in what they say.
As for Meerkat, how can you not like the guy? He's humorous, intelligent and also has some solid opinions. His comments are not malicious (only when necessary), and often speaks the truth. Those who can't hang with him, too bad. Keep slinging mud. I think he can take most of his detractors to the mat. Keep it up. This is a great forum. If you can wade through the bs, there is a lot of good that happens here.

The bilge is at its best when we attack one another's ideas and at its worst when we attack one another's person. For this reason Meerkat and Joe and a few others have lost my respect-for whatever it's worth. It's an important distinction, I think, and one I try to observe, having learned through trial and , admittedly, error.

I agree with the first two posters. AAJ is another who needs to step back as is the recently woman deprived dan.

I like Jack and would choose him a shipmate over the aformentioned

Yep. I've been there and done that, too. Thus, Jack would be wise to watch his back.

We're in total agreement here Rick. Acrimony in this place is always disappointing, but unfortunately not in short supply.

Lew -- I have a theory about that. There's lots of strife in the world now. Many of us are concerned and, indeed, deeply moved by it, but in a certain sense powerless to stop it. That is to say, I will not prevail upon either Hezbollah, or the Israelis to stop shelling one another in the Middle East. The pent up frustration creates a lash out reflex and folks find themselves reacting with a hair trigger when they might not otherwise do so. This is compounded, I believe, by the, I was going to say developing trend, but, alas I take it as an established fact, wedge issue manipulative politics that has lead to the downfall of reasoned public discourse. Karl Rove, in my opinion, is responsible for the downfall of, and has done more harm to, the tradition of reasoned public debate that use to exist in this country. Instead of looking for common ground, unfortunately we now tend to look for flaws and weaknesses that can be used to dismiss other's arguments. We're much the poorer for it.

I try not to fall for it. I do not have to hate someone because I do not agree with his or her viewpoint on an issue. I also don't need to "win" or prove that I am correct. If I listen to why another person feels the way he or she does, instead of reacting in a knee-jerk fashion to a conclusion, I might learn something.

I am living proof that there is much to learn.

Evan, there's truth in your words. It's a tense moment in time; of course there have been those before. How many walk with knots in their stomachs, most especially those who have children? What must it be like to be an Israeli or Lebanese? Last night, the discussion turned to one of our kids' friends who lost his foot in an on-the-job accident. The talk was excited and painful in discussing this tragic occurance. In the back of my mind were the ME events; I was trying to get my arms around the accumulated misery of what is happening, comparing it to the very real impact of one foot.
Does all that is happening excuse incivility or simply explain it?
A thought, borrowed from one of yours is that should one wish to make points, it's easier to do so when arguing with somebody who might still listen.
