So my buddy asked me a while ago if I would store his project car in my barn, indefinitely. So being a pal I said no prob. So today as I was working on rigging on Dove he stops by and we have beer and start talking about what can we do with this diamond in the rough to move the project along & get it out of my barn and on the road;). We came up with this idea that he could use the car as a class project / study aid for some automotive school. Figuring they could bring it along to the next level.
So far he has done a first class job on the initial restoration. Body work is done on a show car level. It needs paint primer and interior and final assembly. The engine has been rebuilt, air suspension and massive disk brakes have been added. He's probably spent close to $25,000 so far and would take another $25,000 or more to get it showroom ready. He is no longer in the position to spend that kind of cash.
So what do you think ? I will find photos or have them up on this thread to show you all.
The story is he spent a lot of $$$ so far and can't spend more so he is looking for options. Additionally I know if we cant figure out what to do
#1 the car will remain in my barn for eternity.
#2 It really is a cool car and would be a real hot ride all done up. I kinda would like to see it finished, I hate half done project.
He asked me ow would we go about finding a vocational school that would be interested in this cool project car. I said lets ask the WBF :D
So what do you all say, give us your best ideas.

Hmmmm... my second favorite car was a 1966 Olds F-85. Had a high output 330 CID engine that would scat!

A good friend from college is the Club Secretary.

I have a friend who has taken her regular car to a local vocational school to have work done and I hate to tell you this but it ain't free. The rates are discounted a bit, but they still charge for the parts and charge something for the labor.

Charging a lil is OK and I would have assumed parts would be an expense. But it would be nothing near the $$$ that a pro shop would charge. Like I said he has already dumped like $25,000 into the car with professional shops.
He is looking to get the car moving along, and I'm looking to get the car moving along OUT of my barn LOL :D
I'm not sure I would take it to a Tech school for the work. Look at this way, he has put 25K into it and thinks it will take another 25K. That gives you 50K in a 40 year old car. You will never get showroom quality at a tech school. If you are going to spend that kinda of money, do it right.
If it was me, I would forgo the expense, build the engine good, get a decent paint job, redo the interior and drive it. I'm not one for showroom cars, cars are meant to be driven, not parked on carpet with "Do Not Touch" signs.

Joe...in today's market...if that car was finished and all dolled up and ready for the showroom floor, I think you would be hard pressed to get 25K for it.....
I saw that. Looking at those photos I think that it needs to go get a paint job and the interior done and put her on the road. I'll say again that I wouldn't try for showroom, but hey that is me. I love to drive cars and not just look at them.

Part it out on Ebay and HOPE you get your $ back out of it.
I know pictures dont tell the whole story but if your buddy paid $25k for what I can see, he took one up the wrong pipe.
Maybe it looks better in person.

Na dude, they do them showroom muscle cars with modern suspension and brakes and interiors. You get a Super Muscle Car!
A Super Muscle Car! like the ones done on The Learning Channel series, “Wrecks to Riches”. They take a wreck fix it up and then auction them for $60,000 there is a big market for cars like this if they are done well.

OK here is the sentimental part of the car.
This was my buddies FIRST car. He found his old VIN # on a old insurance card and searched for the car. He found it out on Long Island in some kids yard who was attempting a restoration. he bought it off of him. The car means a lot to my buddy and he dreams of having his Black Cutlas back on the road and all the good vibes he had as a kid.
Can you give a more detailed list on why he thinks it will take another 25K?

He wont spend another 25K he has lowered his expectations.
But you could easily spend 10K on the interior, leather , stereo, and AC
10K on a custom paint job and 5K to put the thing back together. But now he wants it more like what Cad is saying, Back together painted and running.
I would be willing to bet that for 5K he could get a good paint job and the interior re-done and back on the road. The putting together is something that you and him could do yourself. Just make sure he lets you take it for a drive.

Put it out by the road with a sign in the window "$25.00 or B/O" it'll go away in less than half a day.

would be the first place I'd look regarding older Olds restorers/swap/sell/want ads. He might try contacting the people at Hemmings directly to see if they'd have people, places or resources that he could make a 'mutually beneficial' arrangement with.

Well, once he has it back on the road he will find that he isn't the young buck he was and that it won't be the same. I guess he just has a midlife crisis.

Hey Joe
My buddy Frank has a friend (who rebuilt his Camarro) who might take on the assembly, and get the car off & running...I think R. has to expect actual cost to finish this project, but soon he's gonna need a hot car to attract the you know who, anyway ;)
That car has real value, but only if it's finished...now, it's worth .05 cents on the dollar...
I'll give you the contact if ya want it...
