Yes, folks, it's that time again... I finally remembered to take my camera home and downloaded a fresh batch of photos from the shop. Search for 'schooner heron' or pretty much any post by me in this section for background info on this project..

Here's John the Caulker. He's a third-generation caulker; his father used to own the company that did all the caulking for most of the yards on City Island, NY. His first job was rolling oakum for seven 173 footers. He's now "retired" and pops in now and again to bang some cotton.

This is the veiw inside the boat as of a few days ago. Ben Mendlowitz was by taking pictures that day, and I took this one not long after he did. Note the similar quality of photography (then again, maybe not.... ;) )

Here's a rough board headed for the planer, which is just visible inside the door. The outline of the hull is there too, if you look closely. This picture looked much better when I was taking it, however, problems in difference of lighting proved insurmountable at the time, sadly. Just goes to show ya that we need a longer shop. Also, shows ya that I got the cold end, again. Brrrrr...

And finally, the upper works. A 2X4 ribband had been screwed to the frames just above the deck line to keep everything in place while the last rows of planking are made. Again, the size of the shop makes it impossible to get far enough away from the boat to take a good picture (and there's too much stuff in the way), but it is a rather tantalizing view of what the sheer will look like. Very Alden-esque.

Enjoy! More pics will be forthcoming as visible progress is made...

Awesome inspiration to many of us. Ditto on the smell wish - just what I was thinking. Gotta respect John the caulker - serious dedication in that family. Can't wait to see more finished - JB

Craftsmanship er what? Myself, I refuse to use them. smile.gif

Question here!!! Sir yes Sir MrJeff sir!... yeah its me up the back again ... sigh... What sort of planer are you using? ...I can only see a line of shiney chrome and thought maybe Norm had got his noggin in the way!

Actually I meant that as a serious question for a serious peice of timber!

I never stop being amazed at the beautiful things some folks can make from trees. Also, that inside shot is a good candidate for a wall hanger.

It's a Grizly 20" jobber. Aptly named, since it really is a monster...

Re: smell. You guys really don't want to. Trust me. When we're cutting angelique, the place smells somewhat akin to a barn full of bovines. Kinda fun to see what kind of looks you get when you tell someone you've been building a boat. :D

John Shin... You might very well get that chance. Mr. Mendlowitz was taking shots for his calandar. smile.gif

Thanks for all the comments..
