It could kill 1 billion in the 21st century (10x the 20th). Evolution in action!

Is this the only product subsidized by the federal government (last I heard, $9.6bn/yr to tobacco farmers) that is not only carcinogenic, it has added carcinogens to increase addiction?

They don't really --- other than giving them preferential treatment, exclusive access, high-profile interviews and that sorta thing.

This congressional report makes interesting reading, if you are interested in the topic.

Some interesting facts:

US tobacco production has been dropping for some time. Cigarettes contain 40% LESS tobacco than in times past. Almost half of the tobacco in US cigarettes is imported because it is cheaper than the US grown product.

While US tobacco consumption has been dropping for years, US tobacco EXPORTS have been growing apace, particularly in the Third World.

CHINA is a HUGE consumer of Marlboros, in case nobody's noticed. The developing nations and the Chinese are smoking themselves to death. One wonders why the US tobacco industry is subsidized? Mmmmmm?

Having smoked "offshore" (Australian) Marlboros in the distant past, I can say they're even more awful than the domestic versions. Maybe that has changed...
