I've seen a Zinc wood preservative that can be painted over. Not to be used where it's in contaact with skin, but was thinking in the bilge area.
Anyone have experience or thoughts on the matter?
Thanks

Zinc napthenate is not as good a rot preventative as copper napthenate, due to it's lower toxicity, but the lack of the strong green color makes it usable under varnish. I have used it and find it does the job. I think it is a good idea to let it sit a couple of weeks before you overcoat it but I wouldn't try using a water based finish on it.

Most of the wood preservatives have a water repellent in them. Some of the new ones are using a more modern formula with chemical names that occupy two lines on the label, these replace pentachlorophenol. I don't think any of them are approved by the FDA for food handling surfaces. :D

We have been using zinc naphthenate to treat the bilges in our boats for years. As Frank pointed out, the lack of green color allows us to apply varnish over it.
