Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since my last update, flipping the boat. I've worked on the interior (sealing and varnishing), deck clamps, experimented with seating and dash arraingments, etc.

Today was one of those days that tests your nerves: Engine Install day.

I got the engine about a week and a half ago. (Brand New Mercruiser 5.7L 300HP).

Since then I borrowed a friends engine hoist and built a rolling cart for the motor. With this I was able to preset the engine down angle, fabricate and test the engine beds. I made a bunch of measurements so I would know exactly where to place the beds relative to the prop shaft, etc..

It took a few days to laminate the engine beds, shape them to clear parts of the motor and get the mounts in place.

Today was the day to get it in. I originally wanted to through bolt a lifting eye vertically under the garage door opening - but that clearance with the 15" of space necessary for the rental chain hoist would not let the motor get high enough. I ended up through bolting horizonatally from inside. My big concern was sheer load. The bolt was rated for 2300 lbs SWL on the label, but then the label told you all the reasons don't trust the markings... (Motor only 1000 lbs)

It all worked out - I hoisted the engine as high as possible, then rolled the boat under. I could have used a few more inches of lift. The motor dragged a bit over the deck beams - but I was able to see-saw it and get it to clear..

Then I just lowered it onto the mounts.
It was just me and the wife - but it all went pretty well. My over thinking and re-measuring payed off. The output flange couldn't be placed any better wrt to prop shaft. Very minor (less than 1/16") adjustments to finish aligning.

I mentioned to the wife, the worst possible thing would be for something to let go and the motor to drop 7 feet through the boat, she didn't see the humor smile.gif

Now to buy more inside the boat stuff...

Bob Perkins

Way to go, Bob! :D

I'm a big fan of copious pre-planning; if one imagines all that can go wrong, it rarely does. Good to see and read that all went well.

Congratulations Bob! Having recently completed the engine installation on my project (Puffin 28), I can appreciate the time and energy leading up to the job, and big sigh of relief when that hunk of iron is safely resting in its new home!

Nice looking project there!

Gotta try more of that over-thinking and re-measuring.
Damn! You do good work!
