This phenomenon has delayed the use of lithium batteries in hybrid and electric cars, for obvious reasons. A few hot ears from cell phones have likewise been reported.

That's an interesting story. A friend works on various electric drive projects, studied Li batteries. He once said, "You ought to see what happens when you drive a nail in one."

Back when I was in college and working on hybrids, the button up by the driver for the fire suppression system read like this:
In case of fire:
1. Push Button
2. Open Door
3. Run Like HELL!

If the car went up, it was classified as a HAZMAT level 3.
