I've heard of it. Some of my old flying buddies who spend time overseas use it and they say good things. It has some restrictions - basically you can only to talk to others who are also using Skype and it has to be computer to computer on the basic service. It's a fairly new technology and they'll work things out in time.

All things considered, you can't beat the price, even with the exchange rate. $0.00

Sorry, I'm gonna be a Luddite on this one. I will actively resist having any sort of videophone in my house. There are e-mails, messaging systems, faxes and telephones. Use them. I don't need any prospective clients seeing how messy my office in the background is, nor how much of a fashion-unconcious slob I am when they call me unexpectedly. I'm not ready for the brave new world just yet.

Is it video? I thought it was just audio, like a regular phone. I'll give it a try, but I'll have to get a headset first.

Maybe I am confusing Skype with some other proposed service that included video feeds. Apologies to Skype, but my stance on videophones remains...

No, but I'm a happy user of the Lingo VOIP service!

Yeah - I use Skype several times a week. In my last job I used it several times a day. It works great, I like it.
I especially like that it's free - otherwise the calls between here and Finland/Argentina/Netherlands/Nottingham would either bankrupt me or (most likely) not get made.
Just my opinion.
If you want to Skype/chat sometime, send me a PM and I'll send you my Skype name, etc. Heck, it might even be fun!

I worked for a company that switched its internal phone system to VOIP back in 2001. The technology works just fine, and like others have noted, you can't beat the price.

...
Last question, how secure are VoIP conversations?

Jack

About the same as POTS.

Jack, I'm not that well versed in Skype, but am in VOIP. As I understand it, Skype is done computer to computer and you must arrange to both be online and ready to talk at a given time. VOIP uses ordinary phones and ordinary area codes and phone numbers, and they ring just like conventional phone service. A guest in my home using my phone (VOIP) would never know the difference.

See http://www.skype.com/ Computer to computer is free....
computer to landline.mobile costs but it usually costs less than POTS.
Optioned up - landlines and mobiles can call your computer.....

Voip can be done through a computer or through a broadband router - some of which now have Phone sockets built in...

I use Skype to chat with a friend in NZ. I know he uses it to talk to other folks in the US too.

At least in the US, Skype to landline is supposed to be free to the end of the year, but when I tried it, it asked for a CC.

You can get a "VOIP phone" that plugs into your computer and rings just like a regular phone. Your computer does have to be on though. Anyone considering this route should read reviews carefully first: some work, some don't.
