After all we have learned how can this continue? I understand aboriginal whaling, but commercial whaling? Come on. Does this not make anyone else sick at their stomachs?

Just don't buy Japanese products
Recently read "Logbook for Grace" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0809438321/102-1351428-8213700?v=glance&n=283155
Highly reccomended acount of a whaling voyage in a square rigger out of New Bedford. It gives the authors thoughts in a pragmatic way about the horrors of whaling.

What we've done to the oceans in general is deplorable. President Bush just signed a monumentally good thing protecting a large swath of the Hawian chain. It may be politicking for the coming elections, but I don't care.
Don't the Norwegians still do some whaling?
It's really a heinous thing to kill them unless you have a real need for their meat. The cetaceans are another high intelligence on the planet, and some of the killing, particularly of dolphins but also the great whales, is an inadvertent result of our fishing methods.
I hope we learn their language soon. I think there's much to learn from them, but it may take a Vulcan mind meld. I imagine their ideas are so different from ours, if they think in ideas at all.
We just had a young sperm whale come ashore. I've not heard the conclusions from the necropsy, but it probably got caught in our nets. The USN is also now using a very powerful sonar that is demonstrably disruptive and destructive, basically blasting the cetacean's natural sonar mechanisms to kingdom come, and probably causing other problems like brain blood vessels bursting.
That people seem to be caring more is a very good thing, but we still wake up to a combination of bad environmental news. The politicking, and the bad science that eventually gets exposed, doesn't help the conversation.
People are so vile and so beautiful...so conflicted! I hope the experiment doesn't blow up anymore than it already is blowing up, but the earth will continue, even with drastically fewer of us.

Not only do the Norskis still kill a lota whales but their navy has been known to shoot really big guns at those trying to document the acts.
