I have some beautiful old growth 1 x 10 x 12' doug fir boards that I want to use in various places on the boat.

Problem is that there is a fair amount of pitch that comes up to the surface. No pitch pockets, just an overall film. I've wiped it with solvents of various sorts, but it still comes up.

I love the idea that this wood will probably last forever, but how to paint over it, and not have trouble with the paint adhereing?

I've read somewhere that painting the surface with alcohol hardens the sap and makes a stable surface. Can anyone verify that? Other suggestions?

Thanks

Priming with shellac is the best way to seal off pitch bleeders.

If it's beautiful, why paint it?
