All,

I'm looking for a boathouse on the Maine coast to buy or rent for in water storage of our 47' powerboat Mercury. If you know of anything available, please contact me directly.

Thanks.

Cliff.

By boathouse do you mean the kind of covered dock that is common on lakes? If so, in many years of sailing on the Maine coast I don't think I've seen such an item. The 10' tides would make it awfully hard.

Are you looking for something for the summer season only?

Because of the tides mentioned above, the few floating boathouses I've seen up here have been put in by the very rich, who don't need rental income so much and are pretty reluctant to take on the liability of someone elses boat on their 'property'. It would be nice if there were an easy way to provide protection from sun and salt up here for woodenboat owners... but I haven't seen any. Let us know if you find anything!

Hope MERCURY is looking great, have you had her out yet with her new power?

All,

Thanks for the reply. Looking for a boathouse for winter storage in water, not summer. There's one in Boothbay at the mouth of the harbor that would be perfect, but has a beauty in it already.

Mercury with the repower has been fantastic.

Cruise between 16 and 19 knots and tops at 21-22. Went to Kennebunkport, Boothbay and Jewell for short jaunts. Working through break-in period - next year will likely be up the coast.

Say hi if you see us.

In water winter storage in Maine is likely to be a bit of a problem because of ice. At least in the Deer Isle area I've seen the coves freeze over solid enough to walk across, at which point the near shore area tends to be covered with blocks of ice up to 2 feet thick. That sort of stuff moving around with the tide would seem to me to spell trouble for a boat stored in the water. I suppose it would probably work if the right location was selected and a bubbler was used and maintained, but it sure isn't common.
