I've recently joined the legion of people who have built or are building Iain Oughtred's Acorn Tender (8ft), and I'm looking for a source for a sail, preferably one that meets the specifications Iain spells out in his plans. You can see how I'm doing at http://fatguysbuildingboats.tripod.com/acornjournal.html. I welcome your (civil) comments. http://media5.hypernet.com/~dick/ubb/smile.gif

Ah, I tried your URL and got "This file is hosted by Tripod, a Lycos®Network Site,
and is not available for download. Please check out Tripod's Help system for more information about Remote Loading and our Remote Loading policy" so I can't tell whether to be civil or not.
I'd like to be though, I really would.

P.S.-- Okay, I backtracked along the URL and got to your site and some pictures that way. Nice job. If I get my garage mucked out enough I'll start Oughtred's Humble Bee. If it is as nice as your Acorn appears to be I'll be pleased. Good going.

Dabbler Sails, 804-580-8723, made the lug sail for my Iain Oughtred designed Tammie Norrie. He specializes in sails for small boats and is familiar with the requirements for traditional boats.

Looking good. Just think how easy the next will be.

Kevin: We ordered our sail from Sailrite (www.sailrite.com). I believe we were the first to order an Acorn sail from them, but now they should have the specs in the computer.
Good Luck.

They do:
FOUR-SIDED-MAIN SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE ACORN TENDER (7'10)
(in feet -- "measured" data)
LUFF 4.08
FOOT 6.92
LEECH 11.0
HEAD 7.25
DIAGONAL 7.91
TACK ANGLE 88.00603
AREA 42.74
LACED ON TOP - FOOT LOOSE
The sew-it-yourself kit runs $108 in white fabric and about $158 in Tanbark or Egyptian colored fabric. If you choose to have a sailmaker build the sail, the specifications above and a copy of the designer's sailplan are all that they would need to do the job. Finished prices would probably run from about $200 to $400, depending upon who builds it and how fancy the trim-out is.

I built "PAWS" , an eight foot Acorn about five years ago and had a sail made by Jasper & Bailey Sails up in Newport RI.
I sent the sailmaker a section of the plan with the details as out lined by Ian, and had the sail made from tanbark colored nylon.
I picked up the sail while sailing through Newport, but I'm certain it can be mailed.
The quality of the sail is very high. Five years later, it looks brand new and the tanbark adds a real touch of heart to PAWS.
Oceanus might be an interesting option.
Arron Jasper is proud enough of his sails (as he should be) that he signs every sail he makes and numbers them. This isnt a mass produced product, and is crowing product to a hand made boat.

Oceanus is too heavy for that sail.
For the 10' version of this boat, I paid about $360 from Dabbler. Never regretted it, got my hands full with other jobs.
BTW, your website is a gas...but instead of "tying you up in knots for weeks or months", depending on how much free time you have, take the most outrageous estimate you can think of for the time this boat will take you, and multiply times 4.

Kevin, if you are new to the forum, do a search on Todd Bradshaw's name for more of his good advise. He has posted pictures and descriptions of sails that should set the standard for whom ever you choose to do yours.

From one Acorn builder to another, I think you're coming along really well. I ran into the EXACT same obstacles as you and still have managed to pull off a decent-looking boat. I haven't even considered a sail yet, but there are quite a few good sources posted above.
Some building pics.

Chadd,
Congratulations! That's one hell of a lot of work in 19 days. It took me about 4 months to do the same thing. Nice job.

Thanks, Don! Well between you and me, I had to call in 'sick' [hack hack] to work a couple of days in the past 3 weeks to get that far. Well worth every sick day taken!

Sorry, Norm, you figured out that you have to go to the root and work your way down the web site. I appreciate your comments and good luck getting your garage in shape. I never actually bothered, I just scraped out a hole into which the building frame would fit.
