John has gone the pragmatic way with this rebuild. He's taken the boat back to the 1901 flush deck , refastened the hull with 5000 rivets and put a 2003 ali rig in her so she can be handled by 2( or 1)
52 ft by 8ft 8in.
I reckon I could give her a push with my foot and she'd go across the bay LOL.

You low down dirty rotten scoundrel you!!!!
We're up here on the opposite side of this silly planet slogging away at various and sundry projects, the vast majority of us buttoning down the hatches for winter, and you're going out for a sail on a boat that several of us would give a lesser used limb for.
Next thing you'll be posting pictures of magnificant sailing

Well I did sand down 2 dinghies this morning Margo. :D I think I deserve a little indulgence.
Just got back. Ohhhhh yeah Baaaby.
This boat is a weapon. effortless speed. and we stayed in front of a very quick modern light displacement design on the way home ON THE WIND. She's much more tender than Waione.. very responsive and with the modern fractional rig we could make small changes and tune the helm to whatever we wanted from plenty weather to neutral.
photos tommorrow.

I am fascinated by this approach to restoring/preserving a fine old boat. Lacking the funds to hire your own crew, modernizing the rig while taking the hull back to original seems an ingenious solution to having a boat which will be sailed rather than just looked at. Judging from the neat and efficient deck layout of the lines, she will be raced! But 5000 rivets. That's hard work.

5000 rivets is beyond hard work - it's almost zen!

Her rig is contentious Jo, there's a few noses out of joint. The funny thing is that the people who are upset are the wealthy ones( who as you say, could hire a crew)... the ones who only spend a fraction of the time John spends on the water.. The fact is, she's too big for a gaff rig when the whole point is to be able and take her out on a whim... just 1 or 2 people. John wants to be able to sail her with his wife and that's what he can do. If I owned her I would have had a timber mast and boom but she would look the same as she does now configuration wise.
5000 rivets ? sounds like a lot but don't forget she's monocoque. the rivets are the whole structure of the boat . Also that's about the sum total of structural hull work that's been done, ( apart from a ring frame and a new deck) so that's not a bad deal.
