View Full Version : RumRegatta - SOME MORE?

Man, I am really done.
Apart from making sure my business runs properly, I again organized the RumRegatta, designed every paper, label, poster... and I also had to get a new engine in my boat and had it slipped for a major refit (as seen in the thread "left on an island").

Now everything went more or less ok, except some minor difficulties, but that was to be expected. The best part is that this year I was able to sail the regatta instead of being on the start-finish boat.

But I don't want to bore you with words, here are the pics:

Sailing out of the harbour almost everyone lined up on the danish side of the Bay.

Love it.
So yachts are now invited ? ANA doesn't look very working boat from that angle. Nor does RID.

Oh, don't ask too carefully, John...

There are some boats we all know that were never workingboats. We let them compete anyhow as long as they are gaff rigged.
Boats like ANA though have to compete in the class: modified replicas. That's usually the class I have to sail, but somehow the regatta management put me into the class: fishing boats under 10m this year. But I still didn't have a chance and came in 5th.

While in the harbour those Danes on this nice boat were always just drinking and sleeping, but out in the regatta they were really fast.

I will try to get some more pictures of this. In February I was called by the CAROLINE captain (the CAROLINE is an old danish freigther) who told me that he would like to come to the RumRegatta and will bring with him 6 little open smakke-jolle stowed in his hold. I then arranged the boats to be craned in the harbour and all participated in the little-boat regatta and in the RumRegatta.

"I wish we had some kind of similar regatta close to me." - Joe CSOH

At the risk of sounding too simplistic, Joe, if you want one, create it. Ask your club if they will host a small wooden boat "sail-in", then put an ad in the local newspapers in your region to see if there is enough interest in folks bringing their small home-built or restored wooden boats to CSOH for a weekend get-together. If you have twenty of thirty responses, take that info to the local tourism board and town council /Chamber of Commerce and pitch the tourist revenue factor to them. You may be surprised at what might come from it. After all, most boat owners want to show off their babies, and for every one of them there's ten who just want to come down on the dock and just gawk.

Great job again Martin! If I ever have the means and the time I'll come and give you a hand.By the way do you have any accordion sheet music for seeman's and Hamburgische's lieder.I'm hooked on a great Addi Munster record(Ein Abend auf St.Pauli) and I'm yearning to play 'Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins', amongst others.I've already learned 'Hamburg ist ein schones Stadtchen'.

Hmm Chris I must confess I am a bit ashamed. I play the piano and was once quite good playing the saxophone. Some years ago I bought an accordeon bakck then not more than a joke.
But I got hooked and figured that it shouldn't be a problem to play it since I can play the piano.

So I have acquired some meager skills and tried to learn a couple of songs, of course including classic german sailors songs. So the german version of "la Paloma" is quite ok but "Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins" I still fail to learn, because I guess am too lazy.

Wow that sounds like a wonderful idea. ...... But I'm not sure how the boys down at the club would take to a newbie offering up the club for such an event. Although the added income might be attractive. Off the top of my head I can think of a few wooden vessels that are local. Aside from Dove & Tidbit there is the sloop Clearwater, The Woody Guthry ( still being restored ) and a new / old run-about that could serve as a marshal boat. Although the Clearwater has a sort of bad rep with in the local marinas from West Point, Garrison and Cold Spring. Mostly for its hippy dippy crew who dump there honey pots in the marina's. I wonder what such an event would entail sounds like a worthy thing to pursue. And for purely selfish reasons to be able to go out and sail with a bunch of cool wooden sailboats like Martin ;)
