View Full Version : Rescue me!
I know this boat isn't as sexy as a nice wooden boat, and you guys will probably dis-own me, but this boat is crying out to be rescued. I discovered it about a year and a half ago and it has been on my mind for a while.
I've been talking with the son of the man that owns her. He said his dad bought her and sailed one season than put it in his backyard for the winter and there it has stayed. Still waiting to here from his dad on what he wants to do with it.
I've crawled around on it as much as I can. I've tapped on the sides and all around. I've found no bad spots. The hardware appears to be in good shape. The trailer is in good shape. It appears to just need some attention and she will be good to go.
You guys see if you can help me identfy what she is.

I figure at worst I can get it and if it is shot I can strip off all the hardware and save the trailer.

Same caveats apply as when you first brought it up:
Make sure all the parts are there, including the sails, the boom, the rudder, tiller, the standing rigging, cushions, etc.
I'd still be leery of soggy deck cores and leaking windows. Think "moisture meter". Also, the fact there aren't washboards in the companionway gives me to think this guy didn't much take care of his things. Outside, open, for years: ugh!
Just be aware that it may not be a good deal even if it's free. You could easily spend thousands on this boat, money that may be better spent in buying a used boat that is in a lot better shape to begin with.

She's obviously a small daysailor/overnight camper and would probably serve well in that capacity. Hmmm.
I mean, don't you already have a boat to serve that purpose? She may be o.k. on one the eastern lakes in Tennessee. I wouldn't take her out in our bay or anywhere where the was much of a chop.
You are an experienced guy working on boats. You do see all the work that it would take to set her to rights? I don't know, Chad. I am afraid that I would pass on this one and concentrate on other projects.
Sorry.

I would like to get her out of the woods and cleaned up a little before I make any monetary commenments to her. Like I said if she is not worth saving I can always strip the hardware and save the trailer.
First step is getting permission to take her off his hands. Once that is done she needs some cleaning up before a true assement can be done. I've done what I can where she is at. I've walked around on the deck as much as possible and walked around tapping. I found no soft spots, but that don't mean much.
John if I get to bring her to the house you want to come up and do your pocket knife test?
Yep I've got enough projects, but I do need something to fill the spaces between the weekender (almost finished) and the DragonShip (still in the design process).
Any clues as to what she is?
Chad
BTW according to the son, all the parts including the sails are there. Don't know what kinda shape the sails are in. The hardware is Shaefer so that is a plus. Maybe just maybe they have a small kicker motor that would go with it that I could restore.
I found a close match to this boat by surfing. It looks real similar to the Balboa 20. The profile looks like a dead ringer and so does the cabin details. Here are some photos of the Balboa 20. Whatcha think?

Good pedigree, Lyle Hess design. This boat sailable condition isn't worth more much more than $2500. Let that figure guide you accordingly.
John I'll keep that in mind. I have more fun playing with fixing up than the monetary value. I hope to pull this boat out of the woods and give it a good once over. If it is not worth it, I'll scrap it and save what is good.

Checked over at Sailrite for sail kits for the Balboa 20.
Mainsail kit $365
Jib kit $312

After posting these photos elsewhere I'm pretty much convinced that what I'm looking at is a Bolboa 20. I will know much more after talking with the owner. As of this point I've been talking with the owner's son.
As said before this boat was sailed up until winter storage and just never taken out of storage (BTW bad way to store a boat). I'm convinced from my 2 visits climbing around on the boat that she is complete and just needs a little TLC.
What the heck, if I can get I will get it and clean it up and go from there. Will you guys still accept me as one of you if I step to the dark side and restore a fiberglass boat?;)
From what I gather the Bolboa 20 is a sweet boat and a good sailor.

I'd negotiate from the standpoint that you taking the boat off of their hands is doing them a huge favor, that the boat has no value as it sits and is only losing value over time. If they don't just give it to you now, it's just going to quickly deteriorate to the point where it's going to cost them money to dispose of the eyesore.
If they balk at that, dig your heels in at about $250.

So is mine, not that anyone talks to me much anymore...
Maybe we can get Bell to give us our own little corner of the WBF, maybe he could call it the "Dark Side".;)

That price would be a little light around here. Mooring and fuel prices are making trailered boats a lot more attractive to some folks.
My dock neighbor just nearly-even-swapped his trailered Catalina 22 for a Catalina 27 of the same year and in the same general condition. The 22's new owners REALLY wanted a trailerboat.

CS is landlocked, sailboats are not well recieved or thought of in my neck of the woods,so they tend to be "sweet deals" when found.People around here are so into "go fast" that they dont get the sail thing. In fact the lake we use seeing a sailboat is a rare thing that is stared at in wonder LOL.If its intact ,get it Chad ,have some fun with it.
That price that John gave is real close to what I was finding on the web for other Bolboa 20's.

Hey Chad,
maybe there won't be any catastrophic problems with the boat. The trailer would surely be worth a bit of effort, although it might be difficult to dispose of a 20 foot boat, if you find that it is beyond repair. Good luck. I'd be pretty pleased if I could find an old Victory 21 fixerupper for real cheap! At least I could be sailing! ;-)
Good luck Chad, keep us informed.

It sounds like you've developed an appreciation of exactly how much FREE costs! :D
Joe, I know what the boat is worth and have discussed it with John on the phone. I don't plan on paying for this boat. I found it there and if he is willing to let go of it before it is to far gone I will take it off of his hands. If not he can keep it. I won't lose any sleep over it either way.
I talked with the son again last night and he has not been able to get a hold of his father. He said he would call me when he knew something.
