HELL EXPLAINED BY CHEMISTRY STUDENT

The following is an actual question given on a University of Kentucky
chemistry mid-term.

The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it
with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have
the pleasure of enjoying it as well :

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat)
or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law
(gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some
variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we
need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate
at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a
soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state
that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.
Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not
belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to
Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number
of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of
change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order
for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of
Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase
until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in
Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes
over.

So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year
that, "It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and take
into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two
must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already
frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen
over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is
therefore, extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the
existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept
shouting "Oh my God."

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A"

Very good. What can one say except stay away from religion or become a Roman Catholic. Catholics don't go to hell anymore, they don't even mention it anymore ... they don't even go to Purgatory in main stream Catholicism.

If hell has frozen over and not accepting further souls, then you don't need to aclimatize in Purgatory for the big day ... so that makes sense.

So if we are all going to heaven, well I don't want to go there either ... I'll find somewhere different. You can all keep your 70 inexperienced virgins, you are welcome to them.

I might ask a few of the experienced woman that I know ... where they're intending to go. I hope to see some of you there.

Warren.

Hm. I know there is a hell because I've lived there. Those who haven't are lucky, make interesting ideas about it.

I read that several years ago, but it's still funny, LOL.

actually I lived near Hell....it was about 20 kilometers down the road from Tingvellir, Iceland.....and it was frozen over...with sulpherous steam rising from the cracks made by the volcano below......actually it was a dangerous place to be, frequented by violent tremors.....but it could have been better..I didn't know Teresa....:D

Heyyy now. That story has changed over the years. The original stated that he STILL had not had relations with Teresa, and that postulate #1 was true.

I like the rewrite.

This theory is extremely flawed due to the assumption, with no supporting empirical evidence, that souls have mass. The student probably tricked Teresa into bed using similarly flawed logic and he is going to burn in Hell for that. Teresa, by sleeping with this devil, has made her Faustian bargain traded for a few minutes of heaven so she too must go to Hell. Given the likelihood that souls do not have mass it stands to reason that there is limitless room in Hell and that we can all go to Hell, no problem.

I like this version better than the first one too, even it Jim is correct in his reasoning. However Jim's proposition that souls have no mass is flawed also. If something burns it must have mass, otherwise there is nothing to burn. If souls enter hell and feel pain from burning, logic demands that there must be mass to combine with oxygen to create the chemical reaction necessary for burning to occur.

I have never slept with or even met this particular Teresa but if her actions control the outcome of this proposition, then we must conclude that hell is endothermic and has long since ceased to exist.

Having been around this loop several times, the only thing missing is Teresa. I wish she would show up and settle things for me.

Obviously hell is a real place. Otherwise, why is this posted in "People and Places"?

Hell is a real place...it's in Iceland.....and part of Norse mythology....

Here's the (slightly older and more detailed) version they had posted in the hall at my catholic college. (Apparently the nuns had no problem with it!)

Notice the location has changed and the student is no longer "lucky":

The following is one of Dr. Schalmbaugh's Final Test questions for May
1997. (Dr. Schalmbaugh, University of Oklahoma School of Chemical
Engineering, is known for asking questions such as this on his final
exams.)

May 1997, Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer II Final Exam Question:
"Is hell exothermic or endothermic? Support your answer with truth."

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law or
some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If
they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are
souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving?

I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will
not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell,
lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their
religion, you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these
religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can
project that all people and all souls go to hell. With birth and death
rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase
exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle's Law states
that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same,
the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant.

Case 1: If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until
all hell breaks loose.

Case 2: If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in
hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Theresa Banyan
during my freshman year, "it will be a cold night in hell before I sleep
with you" and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then Case 2 cannot be true. Thus, hell is exothermic.

The student, Tim Graham, got the only A.

And then there was Texan who decided to call his friend in New Yawk City.... He stopped at a phone booth in West Texas and dropped a quarter in the payphone... told the operator the number and the operator said... PLEASE DEPOSIT $3.75 for the first 3 mins.

He said in an outrage... I CAN CALL HELL for a DIME !!!!!
Operator said....sure... that's a local call.
