I have ants each year waiting for the Peonise to open up . For now they just seem to sit there. What are they doing ? Curious :confused:

They do that here, too ... a right of passage, I suspect. They (ants) like that sweet flowerdy stuff ...
No harm, no foul, as ours are ALWAYS very pretty and dominant.
No idea at all, JD, but that's a gorgeous photograph.
I've never grown a Peony. That critter looks ripe with anticipation of something. His/her tail gunner is obviously loaded for bear.

I'd always heard that peony buds exude a sweet sap and that ants, attracted to the sap, were needed for the bud to open. They, supposedly, chewed on sutures in the bud.
A quick google turns up that the first part is true, the second part folklore.
