Just thought I would drop in a few pictures of the boat all done and loaded and ready for fishing. I went out yesturday and caught the first fish that has been caught in that boat in probably close to 50 years. It was a fun day. Tomorrow the fam and I are going back to the lake for a day of floating and fishing and possibly some picnicing. This is the part of the project I have been dreaming about since bringing her home.
Thanks again to all that offered support and advice.

Really nice job. You must be one very neat and careful fisherman, because there's a reason that you don't see many fishing boats with that kind of brightwork.

That's beautiful! Gonna make fishing a lot more fun.

Great work, Dude! For the memory challenged among me, a refresher on her history, please?

First off guys, I said I was a fisherman, not a catcherman , so makeing a mess in the boat won't happen very often. Although I did already have a small impact with a sinker on that deck, but that will be dealt with during next seasons refinish.I realize that fishing boats from the 50's probably didn't have brightwork, but this was my first project so I decided to make it look dazzleing. Besides, the people around here almost never see a wooden boat of any kind, so they won't know the difference. And what else would that gorgeous cedar up there be for?
In December of 2000, I was talking to a friend about boats when he mentioned that his father in Iowa had an old wooden fishing boat in his barn that he acquired when he purchased the land the barn was on. We made the 500 mile trip, picked her up and here we are! As far as the history of the actual boat, we aren't sure. I think it was possibly a penn yan marketed through Sears & Roebuck, since it has an absence of the regular Penn Yan numbers. I'll probably never know the history, but that's okay. I'll make my own. smile.gif

Lumberdude, you should be proud, you did a good job on your boat, did it hurt to put the registration sticker on your new paint?? Fish will probably just jump into that boat just for the ride!! very nice,...Gary smile.gif

Uh, yeah Gary, thanks for pointing that out again. tongue.gif
And that sticker is just to get into a small city lake nearby. I haven't even got the big numbers from the state yet!
Hey, aren't you the same guy who last year was wondering how to do this and wondering how to do that? Nice work graduate! But somehow I can't picture a 23" pickerel thrashing around on your nice brightwork as you try and finagle the damn treble hook out of its throat. Do you place the slimy critters in Ziplock bags before allowing them on the boat?

Shines like a million dollar smile Dude! Nice work, congratulations. Good thinking, mounting the fishfinder in the shade, be a lot easier to read in the sun, not to mention keeping it from distracting from the look of the boat. Have fun. :D

I keep returning to look at this. It sure is nice
Lumber. I'm thinking I want to do a restoration
but I don't want to travel too far to get the
project. I wish I could find something like
this around here. Any ideas or links?

All that work you've done has really paid off, Kory. I don't know if I'd take that thing out fishing and possibly ruin that finish... Just a fabulous looking boat.

Looks great Lumberdude. Use her like she was designed for, to fish. Hey, if she gets a scratch or two it adds character.

Just add another quick note. My co-worker Bruce has enjoyed sailing on my wood scow last year and so all winter we have been looking for a scow to restore together. This weekend he is going over to Slinger, Wi to pick up a '57 scow that has been in a barn for over 20 years. The owner is in his 70's, his neighbor the barn owner is in his 80's. They kind of forgot what was in the barn. The barn is getting rebuilt so everything in it needs to go. I'm looking forward to a similar restore job over the winter! tim

That deck is just amazing! I may have to re-think my "cavalier" attitude towards varnishing. Your dust booth REALLY paid off! And that motor fits her perfectly, too. Somehow, a Honda four-stroke just wouldn't "work"... Is that a battery box under the bow, next to the fish finder? How are you keeping it charged up? Off the engine or just a "trickle charge" of some sort? (And don't worry, any fish scales and blood that doesn't wash right off will just add "authenticity"... ;) )

Tim, be sure and post pics as soon as you get them for that new project! Thanks for the kind words.
Yes Art, that's the battery box. I'm kinda proud of that because it's my first attempt at dovetail joints. I just hook a charger up to it after I return from the water.
My varnish booth is now a enclosed "boat room" within my garage. It's one of the best investments I have made for the boat so far. Cheap and easy to build.
