I was wondering how rough of water something like this could stand? For example the tennessee river between Guntersville AL and Decatur AL? Or even lake Guntersville? http://www.dngoodchild.com/divide_for_power_boats.htm

Hi, I sail in these waters and waves from wind almost never get more then 6". Boat wakes on the other hand can be a hassle.
When I lived in Italy, there were large passenger hydroplanes running between Naples and Capri as well as other places. I rode the hydroplane back from Capri in rough seas (maybe 3 foot waves) and she handled it well. The ride was a bit bumpy but very little rolling or pitching.
Pretty cool double ender. If you build her, pls post pictures.

Will.

willmarsh - do you mean 'hydrofoils'? I lived in Naples in the mid-60's and that's what I remember.

Yes- hydrofoils is what they were ...

That boat is great in protected waters ...
ANYTHING above about 6-12" and you can kiss it goodbye ... (hint, put plenty of foam in it to keep it afloat when you flip her.

I have a small hydro ... look up hydro accidents on youtube ...

Why people want to get on the water and drive around like they are on the freeway makes no sense in any way.

I heard two boating hillbilly's one day talking, and it went like this."This weekend we were up at (name your lake) and did you see us? we went thru (something, something cove) and laid down a few rooster tails did you see us"? "We hit every cove." This is a true story.

One weekend I was fishing but went on Thursday. Well it was Memorial Day weekend. I was catching fish and could actually see the fish in the water. When the power boats hit the ramps some with V-8 engines and blowers. My fishing tackle box sitting on the shore started to buzz and vibrate. Thats the truth. Never saw another fish and did not catch any the rest of the weekend.

I would build a boat that would be safe ,comfortable and quiet so you can enjoy being out on the water.

We rode from Sorento to Capri 2 weeks ago on what they called a hydrofoil. It was a long narrow displacement hull. Quick but not that quick. It never lifted off the water and there was little swell or waves.
I think they may be using the term hydrofoil unlike we would.

There's quite a few vintage organizations actively restoring these great craft.

A good page on hydroplane restoration

A forum member invited me to watch the Detroi Grand Prix hydro race.
It's a day I'll never forget!

Hey Don, did you know that the fastest boats on our lake ARE the fishermen?

250 hp hanging off the back of a bass boat is equally irrational compared to the go-fast culture.

To each their own, I say.

Always did think a hydro with a 10 hp motor sounded fun.
