I intend to purchase an 80% completed Caledonia Yawl. The hull is on a cradle with casters, 19'6" x 6'2". The floors and decks, etc. have not yet been installed. Spars are complete and can rest inside the hull. The boat is in Vancouver, WA (just north of Portland Oregon) and I am in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Any suggestions for a cost-effective way of getting it here? Many thanks.

Jim,
I have no experience with shipping by container. Would it go by truck or train? Thanks.

I have no experience either.
I've heard that if they're the right size for your stuff, they're economical. The standard one is 20' long.
They travel both by rail and truck and there are facilities that thansfer a container to & fro. A container can be dropped in your yard.
Another advantage is that the container is sealed and not subject to pilferage, road crud or other hazards.
I believe that you can rent a trailer for a time if you want to store your treasure in your yard.
Let us know what you find.

Georgian Bay Boy,
Welcome to the Caledonia yawl fold! I hope to get my boat up to Georgian Bay one of these summers.
Boat Forums work! You found a good boat!
I am puzzled that the floors have not been installed yet. They would certainly hold the hull together for shipping.
The boat will fit in a 20' container. Getting a container to the boat shop and loading/unloading the boat to/from the container might be a hassle. Handling the container at your house could prove interesting as well.
Some silly thoughts:
1. Drive to Vancouver, buy a trailer, load the boat, drive home. My boat arrived in New Orleans from St. Andrews, New Brunswick on her trailer. Piece of cake.
2. Fly to Portland, rent a U-HAUL truck, load the boat, drive home. U-HAUL rents a 24' truck that will easily hold the boat.
Good luck and keep us posted. Look for me in my Caledonia yawl on Georgian Bay some nice summer day.

Jim and Wayne--thanks very much for your replies. It looks like I have a solution--a boat moving specialist (Andrews Trucking) will add it to their load the next time they are in California loading Catalina's and they have the room. This will cut my cost by about 40% and will mean I don't have to leave my family or work for over a week. The cost of flying and renting a U-Haul plus gas would be about double what Andrews will charge. I may have to wait two or three months, but that suits me fine.
I'll post again when I know this is a done deal. In the meantime, the boat can be viewed here:

I thought that was the boat. I posted the link here after I saw it at the Caledonia yawl site.
Good job finding a company willing to take your boat on a space available basis. I told you my ideas were silly.
Keep us posted. What sail plan is the boat set up for? Holler when you're ready for sails and I will give you a highly biased suggestion for a sailmaker. smile.gif
