Just for giggles:

This was an area over 5" wide where the wood joining the ballast keel to the false keel above and stem forward was deteriorated or missing. One of the first jobs James did when he came aboard last October was to make a beautiful repair to the false keel when it was off the boat and upside down on sawhorses. Unfortunately, he tapered the scarf to what he had and didn't compare the measurement to where it fit to the ballast keel. When the false keel was flipped over, levered under the boat, keel bolts fitted, and the ballast keel rolled back, only then was the error obvious. And obvious it was.

For weeks I had to keep James away from sharp objects - boy was he pissed at himself... While not a simple fix, the re-repair borders on sculpture and the area forward had to be replaced anyway.

No harm - no foul is my motto. smile.gif

Also, in the process of the re-repair, the keel was lowered and and additional two cans of Dolphnite added - as per survey.

If that ain't pretty folks, I don't know what is...well, maybe the ballast keel sandblasted and epoxied, the bottom planked, and some bottom paint, but one giant step at a time

Is there a sign up sheet for sailing on Sarah when she is finished? She will be a dandy!

Yeah, Ken, you've stood in that spot. And I think the two spots of red lead in the third pictures are the holes you drilled.

Heck of a difference a few months makes with James, who has been dubbed the "Tasmanian Devil of boat repair" by one of the Concordia crowd. :D

Actually Paul, I've told anyone that has asked what they can do to help, contribute, or send materials, (and the folks that have just sent good wishes) to save a few vacation days.

It's a year (probably two)off still, but when she launches, there is going to be the mother of all parties!

Apologizes to the folks at WoodenBoat, but the WBS isn’t going to be able to touch this wing-ding! You think I’m kidding, but I’m already cozying up with the largest yard in town (and one that has overflow parking for 200+). Well, they don’t really have the parking, it kindof sorta belongs to the City, but the folks that come and drop their kids off for swim practice that day might just have to walk a little farther… ;)

She's a beauty, Margo.

With lots of soul, too.

It's getting thru the hard times (of which this is a small one) so gracefully that gives her the soul...

Sail on Sarah.

And fair winds to you and your mistress.

Alan

Excellent Margo. I wish I could come down with a buddy this w/e but the engine is going in the trawler Saturday. It really is great to see progress being made on Sarah.
