I got to...uh..."fiddle" with a Strad once. A friend of mine used to be the junior half of musical instruments at Sotheby's New York. I was visiting and they had Lady Tennant in for auction. My friend Mark handed it to me and said, "take a look at this fiddle...what do you think?" I allowed as how it seemed pretty nice. Futzed with it for a bit

Then he told me who made it and what it was worth :eek:

It was a awfully nice fiddle, though.

Sotheby's is a strange place -- especially "backstage" -- where art masterpieces are just...so much merchandise, stacked cheek by jowl on the shelves. Very odd.
