Us Again….
Thanks for the feedback on our last posting, it was very helpful. We have a new dilemma…looking for some brains to pick..
We decided on the CPES as a repair for our old fir deck leaks. Our new problem is deciding what to put on top of the CPES, seeing as the CPES has no UV value.
Any ideas??
Our boat website is http://spaces.msn.com/furasta1/ (http://spaces.msn.com/furasta1/) if you would like to see what we’re up against…
Thanks in advance, Jim & Nancy

Leaky Deck-CPES. Hum? I think you are sort of pon the right track. But, 1st you gotta determine where the deck leaks are coming from. Is it leaking between the deck planking? Is the old deck caulking deteriorated (cracked, powdery, etc.)? If so, you have to remove the old deck caulking (A Fein Power Tool with a deck caulk removing blade is best). Thuroughly clean the old caulking seams - then you might want to hit those seams with CPES and then re-caulk with a 2 part black polysulfide seam caulk - like Boatlife caulk. Do a search on Boatlife cailk and go to there web site as they have a tech section that fully describes how to caulk your deck with the 2 park Polysulfide.
You boat looks very nice and looks like you are doing a great re-planking job.

CPES, a source of frantic and constant debate out here, is a sealer. Period. That's it, that's all. If your decks are leaking, look to the seams, which CPES will not seal. If the wood is good, cpes will only work with a UV protectant like varnish over top.
The first thing I thought of was.... new caulking, and linseed and turps warmed up, two coats at least... until the fir stopped taking it in.

Interesting and appealing undertaking. Along with everyone else, my caution is taht there are no shortcuts if the decks are leaking. Reef, caulk, pay, finish is the order. I'm sure you know that. Thus the question is; one assumes you are looking for finish suggestions? There's no need of CPES in that program. If you do use CPES, you are pretty much in the varnish camp after that.
Pick the finish you like. The 50-50-50 approach of turps, varnish and oil looks good from here because you have a lot of decking to cover. Or, like me, you could just varnish your fir; no small undertaking. Here's what it looks like.
