View Full Version : Oughtred's -Tirrik design

Just picked up copies of Iain's "Boat Design Catalogue" and "Boat Building Manual".
I'm looking at the "Tirrik" design (in the gunter sloop rig) primarily because of her lines and physical size (16'10" x 5'4").
-Correct me if I am wrong but, at the stern, is that a motor well?
-Is the JII the same as the Tirrik (or the Ness Yawl)?
-Is Jeanie II a Tirrik? (back cover of Boat Design Catalogue)
-What would be the benifits of going with his 5'1" plan, faster? less volume?

Thanks,
Doug

Dear Doug

I am presently building a Tirrik she is the updated design of the Ness Boat. The Ness Yawl and J II are the same boat but 19'6" long so hence slightly faster. They are also yawl rigged where as Tirrik is single sailed. I am comtemplating give my boat a yawl rig anyway but will see how she performs as is. Let me know if you decide to build her.

All the best!

Limey Salt,
By all means keep us posted on the progress of the build. I'm considering a Tirrik also. I need to order Iain Oughtred's Design Catalogue, the only thing I've seen on Tirrik so far is on Classic Marine's site, but it looks nice. I'm looking for something that can be rowed and sailed, and carry 4 large adults in not-too-lumpy water.

How about his "Artic Tern" design?
