I have some hard wood poles that were recently coated with a boiled linseed oil and turps mix. Which seems to have dried out ok. At least, I can't detect anything on my finger when I rub them.

Question is, what do I have to do/which glues could I use on them? Or what about a sealant/adhesive, would 5200 or similar be the go? I want to paint over whatever it is too.

Cheers, Red :D

Oil-based primers and paints are no problem....but all glues are. I used to think the cyanoacrylate Superglues like Hotstuff would cut through oil better, but I was wrong.

If it was sopping wet, then a whiting (powdered chalk) and mineral spirits slurry applied, heated lightly with a heat gun, and allowed to sit for a couple days in a warm place to soak up the oil will get enuf out for a glue bond. Repeat as needed. On the really bad ones, I can be months getting the oil out.

But if the oil is a light coat barely penetrating the surface, I think you can simply cut to fresh wood and wipe the faying surfaces with acetone first.

Most glues 5200 included, instructions state remove all paint, oils, etc, etc. simple enough be sure to scrape or rough sand any areas where you want to glue, Glues are made to attach to the base material otherwise you are relying on the adhesion of the paint or whatever to hold it together.
