I had one once as a kid ... no real memories, though.

So this morning while picking up knotty pine wainscotting for the bedroom ... we came across carniverous plants ... We saw them a bit ago, and my daughter asked for one.

So today I went ahead and bought one, and had it ready when she got off the bus ...

Before she got home, I tested it with my hand, and about jumped out of my skin when it closed QUICKLY and solidly on my finger ...

So the big experiment just now was getting a roly-polu bug off the patio to drop into one of the 'mouths.'

SNAP ... there it went ... an insectorial sacrifice ...

But then all three kids were upset that we killed a 'tickle-bug.'

Can't win sometimes ...

Actually, my wife said if she could only find a 'Venus Brad Trap' all would be good with the world ...

What the heck did she mean by that???
------

They really are cool ... don't need 'meat' to live, but will take it nonetheless ...

I hope I don't get attached too it so much that I post about all its habits and communications like Ish!! (Just kidding, Jack!) :-)

Actually, I have eaten cat...mountain lion. It is white meat and this was very tasty (not like chicken at all). No I did not kill and eat a mountain lion. It was taken legally by a professional guide (More likely one of his clients I suppose) and served up at a big soiree when I was in Albuquerque.

When I was a college student there was a sphagnum bog nearby. I don't think flytraps were there, but there were sundews and pitcher plants.

The flytrap is amazing, isn't it? I'd encourage you to read up on it and share it with your daughter. A plant that grabs your finger is worth further investigation.

Venus Flytraps are indigenous(sp?) to the Green Swamp, about ten miles from the house. Tonya and I were out walking one of the trails around a pond in the Green Swamp a week or two before Christmas, picking up ginormous pine cones to decorate and as we were leaving two Rangers pulled us over and requested to search the car. "Sure, for what?"-- "For Venus Flytraps, They're highly protected in their natural habitat." -- "Cool, never knew that."

Was just informed by Tonya that there's a nursery about 5 miles from the house that grows them and they sell them at WallyWorld(about 7 miles from the house). So why would I drive 10 miles to become a lawbreaker on a Federal level?

Dionaea miscipula is way cool but somewhat difficult to grow. I had one as a kid and kept it alive for several years. The red color in the leaves requires very bright light, so most home grown plants are somewhat washed out looking.
As you may know, the leaf closing mechanism is a sort of rapid wilting set off by touching the trigger hairs on the inside of the leaf.

Here's a site with care instructions:
