She and her friend Hannah won first prize in the province-wide 4H public speaking competition (double demonstration event). This year she moved up to the senior division so was a fifteen-year-old competing against girls up to 21 years old (I think that the oldest girl in the competition was actually only nineteen, though), and we had prepared her to gracefully accept being whupped by the older girls. Fortunately, and once again, the kid proves her doddering old parents wrong yet again.

I had to tell somebody or I'd bust.

Congrats, Gwyn! Does she go on to another level of competition now?

No, there is no national competition for this form of competition (thankfully - she has too much on her plate already!). SHe is also a little disappointed that she & Hannah can't compete next year - once you win the Provincials, you are not allowed to compete in the same category the following year.

That, is a fine result and a very proud parent.

She going to run for office?

No, she's not a political animal - yet. When asked if she was interested in running for student council at her high school, she replied, "No. I want to do things, not sit around and argue."

I think that her outlook is pretty clear...

Good for her, mmd. And good for you and SWMBO too - clearly something's being done right.

Please tell her congratulations for me. You can also say I emphasized that public speaking is a skill that few possess, but which will serve her well her entire life.

She doesn't have to get involved in politics. The ability to gracefully accept (or present) an award, ask a boss for a raise, run a meeting, and plain old interacting with others on a daily basis all draw on basic public speaking skills.

Again, congratulations (all around)! :)

Maureen took some photos:

Hannah (left) and Gwyn set up for their presentation. Their demonstration was entitled "Rub-a-Dub-Dub; Fun in the Tub" and they demonstrated how to make your own naturally scented bath salts. They dressed in pajamas, flip-flops, and bathrobes for the presentation.

Not matter what she does later in llife, being comfortable speaking to a crowd of strangers is both an accomplishment and an important tool. Give a hug for us.
