View Full Version : Bow rope
I repleace the rope on the winch on the trailer the other day with what I had on hand, braided poly.
Will this work or is there something better? I'm worried about the stretch.
I would worry about the strength. Braided poly is the least of all rope.
What would you recomend?

I have been most impressed with seat belt like strapping/webbing used on boat trailer winches. Every 6 years cut off about one foot and resitch the hook to the fresh end.
Poly is not great but it does serve. My concern is UV degradation from sunlight and for that the black poly ropes seem to be the best.
I seen wire used and do not care for it personally, but galv. 7x19 cable is cheap and easy to work and if it looks good it is good, unlike stainless that is always shiny and if stainless flexes is always suspect.
I thought about using wire rope, but I had the poly on hand so I used it. I can always change it out.
How heavy is the boat? Ay the least you could use a short length of very strong stuff as security. Like safety chains on the trailer.
The boat is a Weekender.

Since the winch line is NOT used to secure the boat to the trailer, it doesn't much matter what it's made of does it? If it were to break, just tie a knot in it and replace it when it's convenient. I'd spend more of my concern makeing sure the boat is securly attached to the trailer.
