There's a native desire to have things remain as they were. It's at least part of the human gene sequence to be suspicious of change. Another part is flexible, but you know the part I mean: the crotchet who will as soon shoot the new between the eyes as look twice.

Given that we've got this bred in our bones, it's no wonder the swiftness of the modern world is hard on us. And some changes deserve a jaundiced eye. Mullett Lake was better before the monied monkeys got their hands on it.

Directing this split in our psyches is our task. Until we are all Solomons it is going to be the salient issue.

It's a question of age. Young people want to change the world, older people are happy if it stays the way it is and doesn't get worse. This is part of the reason for companies favouring young employees - they are the right ones if you want to conquer new markets. But due to lack of experience, they tend to overlook the downsides of the changes they introduce or promote.

Henning,

Yes, you're right, it's part of age and youth. The old lament the change and the young embrace it. But I do think the change is so fast today that generations can't keep up. It gives no time for evaluating what is the good and what is the bad.

This is new. The human mechanism isn't that fast. In fact, our psychology is like cold honey.
