View Full Version : Toothbrushes ... are designers out of touch?

Why do not most toothbrushes actually sit up on their own? The ones I've seen/purchased lately seem to be too rounded to not tip over ... resulting in toothpaste on my sink. Grrrrr.
I know that cool design seems to be the driving force ... and bright colors ... but I miss the days when I coule put paste on the brush and set it on the sink without it tipping over every time.
Is toothbrush design THAT difficult?
What I hate is the newer toothbrushes don't fit in the toothbrush holder mounted at the sink. And I've even found some that don't fit in the travel case.

Forgot to mention that part, Chad.
Thanks for bringing it up!!

I always liked this design too bad it never took off.

You could just change the heads for a fresh toothbrush.
It looks cool, but wouldn't gunk accumlate in the rim?
I like the Sonicare. At first I thought it was silly to use an electric toothbrush, but once you try it, you'll never go back. Plus, it has a recharging stand which would solve Brad's problem.
I know, I know... I'm thinking like an engineer and you're thinking like a designer.
Does it really make sense to save the handle and replace the head? Isn't that like having a car with a removable hood ornament? Just snap off the hood ornament, throw out the old car, put the hood ornament on a new one and you've got a fresh car!

Much less disposable plastic for the landfill with just throwing out the head. The tight fit and finish would rule out crap getting inside. Also perfect for traveling and it fits in standard holders as well as lay flat.
Joe, I hope you change your avatar back.
You made your point -- now you're just creeping me out.

Part of my morning routine is fixing toothbrushes for the three kids, my wife, and for me. :-)

The variety, ever changing, is amazing to me. Before I went electric, a Braun(ljb and I agree on something, electric is the way to go), I used to have a favorite. Then I couldn't find the same toothbrush twice! Someone is making way too much money designing tootbrushes, and peddling the bastard array to an unwary public. I found it irritating, not enticing. I liked what I like, what the hell happened to it?
Funny, the basic design has been around for at least a couple hundred years. I remember seeing a handle of bone, badger bristles long since rotted, that came out of an 18th century dig in Mackinaw City. It looked like the Colgate I always liked! Apparently, this was an accoutrement of the relatively wealthy. The poor, when they cleaned their teeth at all, used a stick with the end frazzled.
There's something amiss when half an aisle at the grocery is taken up with tooth care.

Classic toothbrush design wooefully inadequate.
If you are going to spend time on teeth and gums go get a Braun.

So this is what we've been reduced to?

Real or a dream? Wasn't there a toothbrush designed like a Weeble? It would stand up on end.

I use free toothbrushes my dentist gives me. They're not bar; one or two rungs above generic.

Mike,
I don't know, have we been reduced to something? Teeth are kinda important. I've been blessed with a strong set of adult ones, but my childhood was fairly miserable. The torture of that drill, and the orthodontist, seeing me as an exercise, in his cool-shirt- airconditioned-torture-chamber.
The image, the weird gloss, people put on a bright smile is interesting. I wonder how big the tooth industry is? Many billions.
All in all, a frazzled stick does a remarkably good job. I like toothpics.

Sorry, Tonya just reminded me that the last time I joined in on a topic that actually related to this forum's purpose- my hair was brown and gas cost about $0.69 a gallon. (Shut up Doug- OK)

If there's a topic that hasn't been expanded in the bilge, I'll give you a nickel.
Seriously: marraige, divorce, love, hatred abortion, evolution, guns, politics, psychology, religion, cars, sickness, health...need I go on? It would take at least another five minutes to get the basic categories.
Toothbrushes are a welcome diversion from some of the hard stuff. LOL.
Sorry to hear of your tooth troubles, Jamie. I've got to get to a dentist, and I'm not looking forward to it.

Thanks Ish
The good thing is...and I am not fond of dentists... he is good.I'm getting older. He did more to my teeth, although they hurt, than any denstist I have ever had in the past. Teeth are getting older.
What can I say?

But your humpback mountain posts are EXACTLY what the forum is all about, eh?
Notice I didn't post this in any place above the bilge, Doug.

Huh? My humpback mountain posts? Oh, that essay off a blog I posted about the film "Brokeback Mountain?" You took that as bad taste, or homophobic, or something.
Well, I'm offended sometimes too, but roll with it, usually. It's part of the process.
