View Full Version : Drain plug
Hi all.
My 24'wooden boat lives on its trailer when I am not out cruising and does not have a drain plug.I was woundering if there is a reason I should not install one? I would catalog order one from somewere, drill the nessesary hole and bed it in some sort of caulk.
Thanks,
Huey

Most come with a brass tube through-hull liner best bedded in epoxy.
A trailer boat without a drain plug is two flat tires and fasteners badly strained in the wrong direction just waiting to happen, IMO.

Hamilton Marine sells a nice bronze drain plug. It requires 3/4" of wood for installation. Mine sit on 1/4" pads on top of 1/2" garboards. They don't drain completely, but the 1/4 cup or so that gets sponged out is way better than the picture Bob painted. I have seen the boats he is talking about. All of the above damage on various boats and trailers plus a badly damaged skeg and rudder on a Victoria 18.
PS: Pull the plugs on a long road trip. Rain water can fill the boat on the highway.
