Here is an interesting story. Its dated 1998 so I am not sure what the current status is on her restoration process. Anybody have an update on her?

Hopefully they found her a backbone.

Adam, This is the story I mentioned to you.

I went up to look at a Folkboat in Kemptville, and right next to it was this boat. This was last summer.

I can't remember if they had the new keel or not. They were replacing ribs when I was there. Looked like one hell of a project, but I guess they were pretty serious.

I wish that I could offer more information, but I can't really remember all that much about the project. They were still making progress though.

Noah

BTW, she had pretty lines...

I sail a boat of similar size. 41ft against 42,30 against 27. A bit narrower but a fixed keel and all that that implies. We carry about 1050 ft to windward, main , jibs and topsail and most see that as quite a bit.
1753sq ft? I hope those boys are wearing their nappies ( "diapers" I believe you'd call them)when they take her out for a sail.
We have a "restored" 1880's boat local here with a rig built from photos. Most concede that the rig proportions as built from the photos was a bit of arushofbloodtothehead.

she must be designed for particularly light weather.
Anyway , she'll be exciting in 8.

If you look at some of the Fifes' and the sail area that they carry........ its awesome. In last page of #166 the Highland Light, look at the sail area of that ship.

I,d dearly love to see that boat restored and sailing :D .

I meant to say thanks for the link before. Thanks.( I put it in my favourites)

What sort of wind conditions will she sail in as a matter of interest.

Hi. Max Herrington here,in Saint John, New Brunswick. (Restoration of the, " OH YES ". )

Don't have much practical help to offer you, but remember the, "CANADA",on the St. John River. She was owned by the Haines family, and kept at Sand Point. (Harding's Point?)

A beautiful sled.

Dr. Len Morgan was my allergist when I was knee-high to a centerboard box. The Isle of Pines you mention was leased by my Dad, Bayard Herrington and others for years. Then Len and some others took it over. I went duck-hunting there with Dad.

There was,(is?) a wonderful old hunting camp on the Island, with calendars dating back to the late 1800's.

Sorry, I got off the subject.

I wish you well with your search for suitable timber. A very worthwhile endeavour. The "OH YES" was built in 1912 at Grand Lake, N.B. Thank heavens I don't have your requirements to satisfy.

I grew up in the era of Marconi rig - but I remember Dad telling stories of the big, gaff-rigged sloops and yawls on the river. They're at their best sailing off the wind, according to him, but with that tops'l, she'd probably sail a point or two closer.

Best regards,
Max

I,m not to sure what the wind conditions will be where she,s being restored but it,s a large river off the great lakes (fresh water) so I,m thinking it will fairly light air. Maybe someone else will read this with better information on wind conditions around Kemptville Ontario smile.gif

Max, If you click on the second link I posted. It looks like they found her a backbone and are moving forward on the restoration. When I get back to Ontario I am going to have a peek at her. I,ll post my observations and maybe a photo or two.
