It's also big and ugly, but it's what I wanted and couldn't find a design I liked, so I'm doing it myself. A cross between a pirogue and a canoe, my pinoe will either sink or float, that much can be said for it with certainty.

So far it's being framed with cypress, fir and mahogany just because that's what I have lying around. I'm at least attempting to make the contrasting wood tones work nicely. It's 15' from stem to stem and 35" at the widest part of the bottom. The sides are 13" high in the middle. I plan on using 1/4" ply, nothing fancy, then covering with 4 oz cloth and epoxy. It'll be painted outside, bright inside. This will be utilitarian, for dropping into pocket waters for fly fishing and maybe some duck hunting this winter if I decide to take that up again.

The more flare you give to her sides (within reason), the more stable she'll tend to be (AOTBE).

Looks like a good choice, given your specs.

Best of luck with her, Roger.

Yes, I haven't put the thwarts in yet to adjust the flare, but it'll be more than in the pics.

Actually Roger, until you get a little more wood involved, I'd say it's a Pinot ;)

Roger, I know you already know all this, but don't go crazy with the flare. Dories have flare, and you row them so flare does not get in the way of propulsion. Canoes don't have flare partly because you can't get your paddle over the side of a boat with a lot of flare. There are other sound reasons for minimal flare. Look at Bolger's box boats. No flare anywhere. The bottom is already wide like a canoe. There's your stability. Nix to the (excessive) flare. And once the shear clamps have been cut to length, trying to add more flare by spreading them with thwarts will give you more unwanted rocker at the same time. But you already know all this...Its fun making up yer own boat, isn't it?

Jim,
You're right on all counts, as Alan said, it's all to a point! :)
I think she'll be okay. I wanted high sides, because I hate that about a traditional pirogue, the sides are too low. And yes, this is fun!
