Ok positive minded sharp thinking folks,,,what's "affordable energy"?
When's the last time you saw an addict make a committment and changed because of technology?
When we get "affordable energy" can we have $1.50gal gas again? The goofy thing is that all those "alternative" sources of energy become affordable when oil becomes expensive. So when we have more affordable energy,,,we can drink more!

BUSH: Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world.

The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper and more reliable alternative energy sources. And we are on the threshold of incredible advances.

So tonight I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22 percent increase in clean-energy research at the Department of Energy to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy.

(APPLAUSE)

BUSH: We must also change how we power our automobiles.

We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen.

We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips and stalks or switch grass.

Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years.

(APPLAUSE)

BUSH: Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025.

By applying...

(APPLAUSE)

By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment, move beyond a petroleum- based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past.

its. never going to $1.50 again. we are in for some real pain in the next couple of decades. we havent even gotten a taste of what the future of oil prices are going to.

while i like what themonkey said in relation to energy, i dont think he meant it or even intends to do any of this stuff. his words are nothing but bread and circus acts

dont know who he really is working for but it aint the people i know

But serious minded Dutch, last year GW and the Prince walked hand in hand. GW was stern, told the Prince we needed more oil, that expensive oil was a problem,,implying that we need cheap oil.

Yeah,,an oil addict needs cheap oil like an alcoholic needs cheaper beer.

Relax, the market will take care of this. There's still plenty of wiggle room for conservation. Everyone on this forum could probably find ways to reduce his consumption, except maybe Ishmael - and me, of course. I'm using about 100 cubic feet of NG a month, half what I used last year, and only about 40 gallons of gas. None of these alternative fuels will ever be cheaper than petroleum or they would have been in use years ago.

Funny how nobody seems to remember the Jimmy Carter years when we thought we were running out of everything. How quaint! Then along came Reagan and suddenly conspicuous consumption became your patriotic duty.

a market based on cheap oil doesn't prepare for it's own limits. That's like an addict preparing for when he gets fired for being high on the job.

Cmon, how many people are driving what they need? Sell the Suburban, insulate the house, and viola! Same bills as last year. No wonder Europeans consider us a buncha spoiled crybabies who'd rather send someone else's kid to war than drive a sensible car. I'm crying bitter tears right now for all the yuppies who bought the McMansion with the Grand Staircase and now find all their heat going up under the Cathedral Ceiling. And cryin cause it costs $100 a week to take the Suburban to the mall. F' em.

Now, if only they had gotten that backwards...

George, that's a $250Billion down payment,,the bill is bigger once you figure in the cost of increased care for veterans AND funding for new weapons systems for a foe who can't be defeated by the existing ones.

Just what do we have to show for that $10 billion so far?

We only get 15% of our oil from the middle east last time I heard. Has this changed due to some problem in Venezuela or Canada?

CALGARY -- India has jumped into the intense competition for Canadian oil sands assets with plans to invest $1-billion (U.S.) in the next 12 months, a top Indian energy official said yesterday.

India, which has mounted a high-profile hunt for foreign reserves to help power its growing economy, is not worried its plans will put it head-to-head with long-time rival China in bidding for Canadian oil sands assets, said M.S. Srinivasan, secretary of India's Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.

but we filled this wonderful continent by being fruitful,,surely China and India aren't going to do the same?
