I have about 5 planks to repair on the bottom of the mermaid. I know I need to stagger the cuts and get a proper scarf on them. Is there any advice from someone who has done this before that may make my life easier or help avoid problems?
Thanks

See Walter Simmons' book, Repairs. All you need to know for your job. www.duck-trap.com. (http://www.duck-trap.com.)

Yes, you can scarf each plank to its original mate but you can also fasten up the ends with stout butt blocks between frame bays. Scarfs or butt blocks stagger them at least 3 fram bays apart and 3 planks apart where ever possible. Scarfs at the plank end may actually be more difficult to fit when dealing with a twisted plank combined with bevels for the laps and having to slide the new plank into position from two directions. Butt Blocks also allow a firm attachement point with through fasteners.
Unlike carvel planking you will definitely need to remove 2 planks to replace one. The upper plank being removed facilitates clamping the lap, checking the bevels, and clamping to the ribs for final fastening.
These are just the basics, the learning curve is fast when you get started.
Good Luck, can you post a few pics?
