It looks like she knows how not to be left behind. You been paying attention to that duffle so she figures that it must be important to you. Therefore she puts herself right on top. :D

BRRRillliant!

Ceilidh
(KAY-lee): Literally means “visit.” A Scottish or Irish dance.

an informal social gathering at which there is Scottish or Irish folk music and singing and folk dancing and story telling

Céilí (Irish reformed spelling), or Ceilidh (Scottish and older Gaelic spelling), pronounced Kay-Lee in either case, is the traditional Gaelic social dance in Ireland and Scotland. In the old days, before discos and nightclubs, there were céilís in most town and village halls on Friday or Saturday nights and even now they are not uncommon. ...

Slainte! :D

Get a length of line and start teaching her to tug on it. ;) Play now that could be a big help later as your crew. smile.gif

Hal...thanks for the historical info..being Scotish, I like that connection... :D ..and Donn...yup...but only so far.....
Still having trouble with the crate.....won't eat her treat and have left her remaining dinner in the crate......when I put her in it for the night.
She does visit it during off hours and goes in it.grabs a toy....etc....without my insistence....perhaps time is the key......She is certainly not afraid of it......but......
And she certainly finds her own space when she wants to take a nap and wants nothing to do with me....
How long did it take for Red? And what am I doing wrong
psss. I'm patient...just curious....

When she learns that the cage is a sanctuary and not a prison she will take refuge there. The more cave or den like you can make it the better. When my son yells at his border collie she just heads for the cage and ignores him. Smart dog, my son used to ignore me and just retreat to his room.

Never tug a line with a working dog. No competitive games at all. If you want her to pull a line, tie it to something like a small wagon, so it seems like she's working instead of playing.

Teach her to catch the end of a thrown line. Red will catch a dockline, or take one from the boat to the cleat. She never learned how to bend it to the cleat, but she holds on perfectly.

This breed loves to work for you. Get her to put stuff in your sea bag. Get her to take things to another room. If you make each behavior a job, she'll get it immediately. When we first got Red, I took her out in the yard when I went to police up pine cones. I walked around picking them up and putting them in a 5-gallon bucket. Within minutes, she was tearing around the yard picking up cones and dropping them in the bucket. At first, she got a baby carrot for each cone. To this day, she does it for free. I just set the bucket down, and off she goes.

ssor....It is more like a cave...with some treats...but man...you aughta hear her repertoire.....
Again, she is not happy about being in there.I don't want her to be afraid of it and so far, she seems happy enough to visit it.....
BUT.......

Ross is right. She shouldn't look at the crate as a pinishment. That's why I hate the idea of crating them overnight. She's slept curled up with mom and sibs all her short life, so she's still lonely, especially at night. Try leaving the crate door open at night, and close the bedroom door. If she's got a nice warm blanket (fleece) in the crate, it'll help.

Feeding. Don't ever leave a meal for her to finish later. She eats it all when you feed her, and gets no more until the next mealtime. Don't feed her in the crate, unless she's traveling in it, and even then, very little. Water and treats are ok, but not meals.

What are you feeding her?

Donn...how old was Red when you did that?
Ceilidh is just under 9 weeks....
Perhaps there is no age requirement.....I'm asking...

Good advice on the crate...will try that tonight....What I did was based on what Jane said...or in one of the booklets pamphlets Jane gave me...was personally oposed to that method but

She is finishing off the food that Jane gave me...am not sure...The only food recommended in a sheet ( from Jane ) that I can find in the area is a Wellness brand....
I'm going Tuesday to pick some up.....I do not know anything but the type...i.e., whether it is chicken, grain, beef etc...Will have to see what varieties are available down here...

The pine cones? She was 5 months old, which is when we got her. Your pup started learning when whe was 2-3 days old, and she's gets more and more able to learn every day. She'll notice behaviors that please you before you know it's happening.

Does she whine a lot at night when she's in the crate, Jamie?

uncas
02-19-2006, 12:57 PM
for about 10 minutes.....and then...sack time.
Did have to take her out in the middle of the night last night......I think she has been eating cat **** from my lawn....anyway, did her thing...and then, unhappily went back to the crate...
Think I'll try Donn's suggestion tonight...there is nothing on the floor she can reach in the bedroom anynmore that can hurt her....see what she does.

Yep, the separation from you is the reason she doesn't like being locked in the crate.

It just gonna take a little time but she will get used to it.

Dogs have Separation Anxiety. Especially when they are puppies.

And yes...she is with me 99% of the day...so that makes sense....Mike....
In fact, as I write...she is 8" from my left foot asleep.... :D

Another trick is to put an article of your dirty clothing in the crate.

The scent may comfort her.

When we leave the house and come back, we always find that Heidi has chosen a piece of clothing, like a sock or pair of my long johns and put it on the bed with her.

That's why she likes the duffle bag too. Because it smells like you.

She's a sweet lookin little pup.

I'd like to see some more pictures of her.

Do ya have an old well worn winter coat that she could have. Don't wash it first. Also you might get her a teddy bear not too big. We had one dog that had a small collection of little stuffed toys and each night she would tour the house and collect them into one place.

Mike...I'm learning from Joe...There will be a lot as the months roll on.....
I did think the Duffelbag was a nice touch...for the first of many...
I mean heck...on my travels through Maine and further down east...what photos would you rather post for me....my hairy crew or the bald guy...

I can see it now...Newport...2006..." Oh this is Ceilidh " from the crowd..." We know Ceilidh " from the admiring boater....." Oh, isn't she sweet..." from the adoring women....
Of course, I will take second seat!!!! And Uncas, probably will have to take the last seat available.... :D

ssor...yup..she is in the process of collecting..... :D

There needs to be a safe place on the boat for her in bad weather...perhaps that she will equate to the crate as a safe haven, so that she won't be underfoot in bad weather...but where she can be near you. Brandi (number 2)had a place in the cockpit coaming that she could get into with her nose looking out, that had a pad...she would be near me when steering, and could see me on the fordeck....never lost a pooch...nets all around the boat, gunnel to lower lifeline is a good idea also. She will need her personal hideout below decks too...you can also train her to go on a piece of astroturf. Attach a line to one corner, then kick it overboard after use, drag it for a couple of minutes, then back aboard.....get her own passport...it's neat and may liven up your meetings in foreign ports to keep prying eyes from a questionable load of illegal grapefruit...

get her own passport...

I was thinking about some id.....especially going to Canada.....is there really such a thing...Chuck...

regarding the other suggestions...Uncas has a deep cockpit...so that is a plus.....the astro turf...either that or even a door mat.....with the line attached to one corner....
It is going to be interesting......but I won't be leaving a slip for at least two weeks after getting on board...except to go out to the river and play a bit...get her used to it....
And I have a mooring in Hamburg Cove which will help.....for shore/dinghy training.... :D

One problem I had with Red on the boats, was keeping her there. If she saw a raft of ducks, or a gaggle of gulls on a sandbar, she had a propensity for leaping overboard and swimming at them, barking furiously. It happened quite often when she was younger, so I rigged her to a line that limited her to the cockpit and just into the cabin. She hated that, and learned to stay aboard unless I sent her off. She loves to jump in and swim to the beach, where she waits for me to throw a line to her. She'll pull the skiff right in.
