My sister, a frequent "lurker" here, has fallen for a Lyman for sale that she's "stumbled" across. $19,000 sort of took me aback, but it DOES sound like a pretty nice boat... Who knew? "Best bilge" a catagory for competition in classic boat shows?

"1962 Lyman 24' Soft Top/Sleeper $ 19,000 (Price Reduced) Winner of "Best in original condition" at 2001 Boston Antique and Classic Boat Show. Judges said bilge was best in show. Hull and 318 Chrysler in excellent shape. New cushions, hatch, batteries and new plywood floor covered in Nautolex in 2001."

She says everything on the boat is vintage 1962 and in GREAT shape. Sound reasonable to you all?

It's a real nice boat. The price, IMO is at the high end of OK...depending on how it's equipped.

Yeah, I was taken aback too when perusing the Lyman adds somewhere, a year ago. Pricey!

What does she plan to use the boat for? The Chris Sea Skiff of the same era was also a nice boat and tend to sell for considerably less. We sold a 58 twenty six footer with a flat head six, in decent usable condition for about three K, just five years ago. Still wish I had that boat somedays.

I can't tell you how many hours I've spent fishing in Lymans like this one Art. I've had a half-dozen of them, from 15' to 18' side-steers. Wonderful big lake boats.

"What does she plan to use the boat for? "

Good question. Re-live her childhood maybe? She says she just wants to have something that's "a lot of work" back in her life. And our grandfather had a smaller Lyman with a big 'ole Johnson "Yachtwin" on Lake Winnipasake when we were kids. We used to marvel that the bilges were actually "dusty"! I think she was looking at one more like Gramp's boat when she spotted this one. She's in Salem, about a block from the town dock, and this one is pretty close by and has moorage available. She spends most summer weekends at home on the Cape where we already have an old "Whaler", so I think she'll mostly use this for quick evening, North Shore cruises after work. Maybe as a "commuter" to get back and forth from Salem to P-town? Hmmmm... Probably faster than driving through the "big dig" and Rt. 6 every Friday! I wonder if an inboard like that can be allowed to ground out on a mooring at low tide? Is the "running" gear exposed or protected by a skeg?

Here's a picture of the one like "Gramp's" that started all this... I'd kind of like to have one of these myself! A "tender" for the the Dark Harbor maybe? (Don't tell SWMBO...)

Art,

In a recent wooden boat there was a pre-war Islander for sale. 18 ft., solid planking, inboard four cylinder Gray, side wheel steering, and, of all things, an outboard rudder! Now THERE is a cool lake boat, if you don't wish to bomb around with a big six or eight.

The ad said completely restored, on a trailer(I want to say Pennsylvania) and they were asking ten if I'm not mistaken.

After working on it in the back yard she'd really have something. It's probably sold, but I haven't looked.

Another great Lyman boat club with a classified section on their web site is the Lyman Boat Owners Association---->
http://www.lymanboatownersassoc.org/
This club is host to the best boat show I've ever been to. "The All Wooden Boat Show". The show is in Huron,Ohio in August. The show is open to all types of wooden boats, not just Lyman's. After attending last years show I was inspired to buy a 1961 16' Lyman outboard runabout, that I'm currently restoring. I will definately be attending this years show and if any other forum members would like to meet at the show for an icey cold beverage and talk wooden boats send me an e-mail. See you there!

Well... Looks like she's taking the plunge. "Handshake" deal with the owner for her to take possesion pending a future, (when they have time) survey by Crocker's in Manchester. Results of the survey to determine the final purchase price. I suspect that come fall, her "lurker" status here may change!

My father, (who btw, started owning wooden boats about the time fiberglass first came on the market) thinks we're BOTH nuts! ;)

Congratulations to you and your sister Art. Lyman's are really well made and beautiful wooden boats. The problem with so many wooden boats made 30 or 40 years ago is that there is no historical information on the builders, or advise on where to find parts, or pictures of what the interior is supposed to look like, etc. This is not the case with Lyman's. As you can see in this thread there is a wealth of information online. All of the Lyman sites have forums and Tom Koroknay put together this Historical page---->

I think your sister made a very wise choice, has great taste in boats and is already getting good advise if she's getting a survey. Best of luck to you both.
