The sternpost on my Windsprint is only about two inches wide. The smallest plate size I've been able to find for a gudgeon is three inches. Does anyone know of a source other than Jamestown Dis. or Hamilton Marine that would have what I need to fit it? It looks like I need something that fastens vertically and not horizontally. Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Try classic marine (UK). That's where I got mine.

Here is an alternative that works, I used it on my Bolger double ender....

Get 4 shoulder eyes, put two in the stern post and two in the rudder, so the rudder eyes are just above the post eyes when the rudder is where you want it. Then take a piece of threaded rod the size of the eye holes, put a lock nut at the upper end, then drill a small hole at the other for a hitch pin, or for that matter, a wingnut. I have a kick up rudder and don't have anything on the lower end, just a lanyard so I don't loose it. The rod slips through all four eye holes, and works fine.

Tell me more about the material that you used. I'm considering the same idea for my 14' sharpie from Parker's book, but sources for bronze hardware are non-existent in my neck of the woods.

Rick, All I could find at the time were Stainless shoulder eye bolts. They weren't long enough to go all the way through the stern post, so, Since I was doing a small boat I drilled a couple of pilot holes and set them in epoxy.
But now I can find bronze.... ;)

How's Asheville doing? My family all live down there.

See Payson, Build the New Instant Boats, page 56. Dynamite shows how to make rudder hardware from 1/8" brass strapping & 1/4" brass rod.

I used a similar design for Blackfly (although I made two "C" shaped brackets, rather than 4 "L" shaped ones.

Thanks everyone. I may make them but if I do I want them to be bronze. I've decided on all bronze hardware and have already installed a bronze bow eye.

For a small boat like this even a couple eyes, of bronze or stainless, screwed through the sternpost, would make decent gudgeons. The pintles...be creative.

What does Bolger specify?

And this is a double ender? I'm passingly familiar. If not...

Hi Greg,

Asheville is cloudy and chilly, not conducive to messingabout in boats. I'm heading down to Daytona to see my parents next week, will be looking for an inexpensive source of glass or polyester cloth for my boat. Anybody know where to start my search down there?

You could order your glass from Jamestown Distributers and by the time you get back from Florida it will probably be waiting on you. Their service is usually fast and dependable.

On my 18' sharpy skiff my pintle is much like Greg H's, except that I used plain steel rod with a large hook bent into the top so that it rests over the top of the sternpost and transom. Nothing holds it in place except gravity. It is easy to ship or unship the rudder and works great.

GregH, interesting method you came up with.

The only problem I could think of would be noise factor? Is the pin a close fit to the inside hole diameter? If not does it knock around a bit at rest or light conditions?

I had a problem with my new boat I am building, the plans show the use of 30mm laminated timbers for the rudder blade, 19mm for the rudder cheecks plus some room for movement. This all adds up to around 70mm, and it wasn't until I started looking for standard rudder hardware that I realised the largest stock gudgeons width was 50mm !!
I ended up overcoming the problem by using transom mount gugeons on the face of the rudder head and fitted stainless strap across the face with returns on either side for good fixing.
It dosn't look too bad but one day I will get some proper ones made to order.

Where was I going with all this.......
Oh that's it, it's amazing how many ways you can hang a rudder off a boat.

Some time ago (can't remember where I read it) someone developed the use of old car seat belt webbing slotted into a block fitted to front of the rudder and to a removable wedge shaped block on the transom. They claimed it was quiet and lasted for some time, also the availabilty of materials is endelss and cheap from wrecking yards! smile.gif

It's a fairly close fit, within an 1/8 inch. It nocks around a little but not enough to make me do anything about it. ;) The rake of the stern post keeps it under outward tension all the time so it's not just floating around . Make less noise than the oarlocks.

Gate hinges....Home Depot. They're made to last 20 years outside in the weather with kids hanging on them, etc. I've never had a failure and spent 10-17 bucks at one time.

And the simple answer is, Find a supplier who can provide gudgeons with the mounting holes above and below the eye, rather than each side of it.

Can you find pintles with straps that match your sternpost ? Drill out the pin ? You might even inlay them.

Check out www.porttownsendfoundry.com (http://www.porttownsendfoundry.com) , they probably have something that would work for you, or they could make it. Nice website if you haven't been there before. Good luck and have fun.
