Awesome! Any idea what type of design/rig she is?
It looks like the deck is flush with the sheer, is that right?
Jeff

Okay, some informations as far as I have them. She is a an ocean-going boat that will be rigged up to resemble the 18th century Mediterranean pirate ship Bombarda. The hull is 60ft long and 20 ft wide.

The hull planking is made out of wild jack wood (artocarpus hirsuta)- a species which is approved for boat construction by the FAO (the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation). It is a durable, resilient timber with golden brown colour and density lesser then teak.
The hull planking is copper nailed onto sawn transverse framing and riveted on the inside over copper washers.
I'm in contact with the Italian naval architect of this 60’ vessel and the boat builder in India has already built several other wooden boats to his design. One for the designer himself. These boats are now for more then seven years in use and according to the designer, the owners are more then satisfied. One of these boats, the 46’ Wanda shown here, won a price at the wooden boat show in La Rochelle.

I have got several quotes from this builder ranging from 46’ to 57’. But I’m not sure if it is okay for that forum to post them here.
All the best

Thanks, Jochen.
If you have no financial interest in the builder, then the common practice of this Forum is to exchange price information for public benefit. It's promoting your own economic enterprises in a direct way that is discouraged.
More information on vessels like this may encourage the building and preservation of more wooden boats... :D :D :D

From what I can see from the photos, that's an excellent buy.
You couldn't come close to that price here.
I'd want taller bulwarks with adequate washports, though.

That is unbelievable! Wow. Nowhere close to that is right, even if I built it myself out of salvaged, rotten 2x4s!
Thanks for sharing. Must show to SWMBO! :D ... :D :D
What do you all speculate that it would cost to have that same boat constructed professionally in the US? Based on a conversation with a Malabar 2 builder last summer, I would guess at least $800,000 in construction costs alone and maybe 1.2-1.4 mil by the time it's all done. Am I way off? Someone help me.
Jeff
Unreal!
I suppose this builder will build to any specification.

I guess this is why our corporations are outsourcing everything to India tongue.gif

Absolutely beautiful, but 20 foot beam on a 60 foot deck? Was a 3:1 ratio that common?

Now you people are going to really drool ...............the export price of a wooden boat of similar size and finish built in BRAZIL is HALF (50%) of what it is in INDIA !
Additionally, BRAZIL has an infinite variety of fine tropical woods for you to build your wooden boat.
BTW, the jackfruit tree (from Asia) introduced here 450 years ago by the Portuguese colonisers is propagating so vigorously, as to stifle other vegetation in the hills around Rio de Janeiro.
In view of this, our Mayor´s office has recently disclosed a plan to fell jackfruit trees for this very reason.
So, if you want to use jackfruit lumber for the hull planking, it´s yours for the taking !
