Well after too much procrastination Ive actually begun makin sawdust
Was a bloody bobbydazzler of a day today nice an warm not a cloud or droplet of rain or nuthin just nice sunshine... so decided to drag out the old dining table and the old 12in thicknesser and circular saw into the sunshine and start getting my keel timbers ready
They will be of Malaysian Sepiture and has a quite amazing grain texture

So I cut the lengths for keel stem and rudder from this and begun thicknessing the stuff down from 1 1/2in to 1in to be joined when lofted and cut...

So anyway in case anyones in doubt or denial that Im actually starting this epic journey heres a few pics of ol twinkle toes doin the thicknessing dance

Stay tuned for monumentous updates and 1001 questions of a rather redicously simplistic nature as the journey begins

Is that me midsection keg yer referin to or the to be built boat young Mike? :D
Actually this stuff is kinda heavy but well its either this stuff or Kapur or Jarrah either way its gonna be heavy... and since the Kapur's for the Valgerdas Keel and the Jarrah... well most of that has been earmarked by her highness for floors in the house
Got a question about that Kapur keel too mate so hang on and look in designs will you? your advice and imput would be appreciated

wait wait wait... Dingo, are you actually buidling a boat!? ;)
Seriously though, I thought you had moved too far from shore or something and that's why you were sans anything that floated?
Well, what the hell is it? Any pics of the design online so we can see what she'll be when your all done mucking her up?
he he, just playin.

" weigh a ton"..
just you wait till he has some lofting done, cuts made, perhaps some forms... then we'll suggest a completely different design. :D
what did you decide on Shane ?( getting in early) ;)

Shane, it looks like a good start. Don't let these yahoos give you too much guff about the weight. Your keel might be a bit heavier than the plans call for but I think the boat can stand it.
Don't tell 'em whatcher building. Make 'em wait and figger it out. :D

How would you know if was talking like a pirate? Very fine job of starting. If he takes a nack to making boats like he makes "Hoons", We should be looking at a fleet of pirate ships in no time. :D

Hear that planer sing! But ya know, I've seen you jump out of your skin over such a variety of boats...big, small...I'll bet those timbers become keels to six or seven different boats (each one smaller than the last :D ) until you're bringin all the pieces indoors to assemble the boat on the kitchen table! Whatcha gonna do with all the chips? :D
hey, I know how great it feels to "lay a keel" Congratulations, I'm looking foward to pictures.
Oh, and DON'T tell us what you're building...it's too much fun to try to guess what grabbed your gronicles!

Cheers Art I loved the progress reports on your baby... born in a storage shed if I recall wasnt she?... these small thicknessers work okay dont they not quite up to the real hardwoods cause man did she complain as the long boards went through... then I thought Id move the big girl (new 15in job) out and try to arc her up but shes sprung an oil leak in the gear box so I gotta spend some downtime fixin her... buggar of a thing but never mind onwards and upwards she'll be right

Go for it Shane ... :D
Mate - are those photos of you at the thicknesser so small so that we can't tell whether you're wearing muffs or not?
I spent a couple of hours last week tailing out on the thicknesser and table saw - we ran out of 15mm teak planks for the foredeck and had to rip into some planks. Its a bit sad watching 25mm teak go down to 15mm :( Still, the foredeck is now covered - except for the kingplank and the spot where I'm building a "Duffy Dodge" hatch.
BTW - the chooks love the shavings!
Ian
Ahh,boat building...there's nothing like it.
Watching those straight sticks of timber become fine curves...it's poetry.
