For those of us who have interest in such things, a classic yacht with no small amount of history attached is currently for sale here in Nova Scotia. The yawl "Elsie" that Alexander Graham Bell gave to his daughter as a wedding present is being sold. I'm not promoting the sale of her, just thought some might like to learn a bit of her history. Details can be found by going to http://www.sunnybrookyachts.com (http://here) click on "Yachts for Sale" in the left sid eof your screen, and then click on "Bell Laboratories Yawl". From their listing:

Designed by George Owen by the request of Alexander Graham Bell

A wedding present to Bell's daughter "Elsie" and her husband George Grovesnor, the founder of National Geographic

The Cruising Club of America was formed in discussions onboard "Elsie"

White hull of long leaf yellow pine over white oak frames

She sleeps six with crew's quarters forward

Marconi rigged yawl sailplan manageable by two

85hp Westerbeke, 2x 12v bateries, Invertor

Five sails finished in tanbark by R&L & North

Preserved by current owners to a high degree

Nice boat.

... equals about $135,000 USD. Hell, Oprah paid $600,000 USD for a Shaker beside table that hadn't nearly the cachet of history attached.

EDIT: Whups! Didn't notice that the $175G was already in USD. The Oprah comment stands, though. Replacement cost of the boat would easily be 2x - 3x.

Seems as if the sheer falls off near the back, giving her a bit of a droopy counter. Just my observation. Otherwise, a nice boat.

She's been for sale for more than a year.. probably going on a year and a half. I remember seeing her listing and drooling over her quite some time ago and of course whenever I take a look she pops up.

She sure is pretty. :)

....and a lot to be spent in repairs too:
Her hull is "sagged" (I don't how to say it: I mean the sheer tends to be inverted), her cabinsides are deformed by maybe excessive deck caulking or narrowing of the hul (or both)...and that is what one can see for a low definition Internet pics. AIE!
