I saw the same thing as the first pic here in PA a few years ago. 'Tho the pickup had to hit another car before they could launch the boat and get it to land in the truck bed.

I had a head-on collision with an unsecured boat a couple of years back.
It was on a narrow road leading down to the river - a ute towing a trailer with four dinghys on it came the other way around a corner - with one dinghy on my side of the road and swinging from its painter - which was all that was tied to the trailer.
My choices - 65' down the cliff, head on with the tow car, or head on with the dinghy. Its amazing how much noise a dinghy makes as it explodes.....
